A great resource. Being a doctor there are some errors

Must have book for those into yoga, teaching yoga, and all bodyworkers. A great resource. Being a doctor there are some errors, for example, she says you can fix bow legs b/c it is a muscle imbalance but admits that you cant really fix intoeing or out-toeing b/c that is a bone issue. Obviously, the bowleg/knock-knee issues can also be boney abnormalities and not corrected muscularly. But I did not find many points in which i disagreed. Her program is a good one and most of what she says is spot on. A very good learning resource.

Great book. I had to purchase as part of my yoga teacher training and started using some of the recommended joint openers on myself first with amazing results. I also recommended them to friends who love it. Great book for yoga teachers or aspiring students that care about sharing yoga with all levels of people. The book is great too because he talks about assessing his clients and if you are going to have private yoga clients you will need to do this as well and be in tune with what they need for their health and wellbeing.

I have been practicing and teaching Yoga for 35 years, for the past 25 years I have practiced Ashtanga, unfortunately with age I am going to have to give up Ashtanga. I would recommend this book to teachers and beginners. There are valuable teaching techniques for the teacher and for anyone "beginning their Yoga Path." It will provide the novice with the information to seek a qualified teacher. Twenty four basic asanas are included in the book, but with the adaptations of the poses, the same principals apply. I am looking forward to becomming a Certified Yoga Therapy Teacher in the near future, after reading this book, this is where my path is taking me. ERYT

Internationally acclaimed Latvian novel

I loved this novel. I saw an overview of the history of Latvia of the past two centuries with characters of a single family.
The feelings and the thoughts it evoked were powerful. This is a fine translation, but I kept thinking that the original Latvian would have been richer.

The evolution of mankind depends on its ability to adapt to its own inventions. - Janis

Flesh-Coloured Dominoes by Latvia's Zigmunds Skujins is part surreal farce, part exploration of identity and what it means to possess a collective national identity. The chapters alternate between the eighteenth century misadventures of the Baltic German aristocracy and the Romanovs of Russia and the coming of age of our nameless narrator during the Second World War. Although the two narratives come together - more or less - in the end to answer some of those identity questions, I found the two halves difficult to reconcile.

After his parents disappear with the circus, our narrator is raised by his grandfather, a wise and generous man whose "...old-fashioned ways were tied to exacting precision, his wild imagination to deep-seated knowledge. It's possible his old-fashioned ways weren't really him being old-fashioned, but a display of his disdain for conformity." That disdain for conformity will come in handy - also dangerous - when the Nazis and then the Soviets arrive in Latvia and your identity, and how it is determined, literally means the difference between life and death. The questions of identity raised in this narrative produce a genetic and philosophical knot.

Meanwhile, in the next chapter, Giuseppe Balsamo, alias Count Cagliostro, alias the Great Cophta, is at the height of his occult influence over the European nobility of the late eighteenth century. One of those who falls under his spell is Baroness von Brigen whose husband has reportedly been killed in battle. When the Count, during a s�ance, tells her otherwise, "Where there were two, now there is one..." in some sort of Frankenstein's monster scenario, the Baroness goes in search of the half of her husband that still exists. Guess which half. The questions of identity raised here are more obvious.

There is much humor to enjoy in Dominoes. Describing a wedding: "There's a mob of clergymen in front of the altar. There's one Orthodox parish priest dressed in gold, like an icon, with a golden mitre on his head. And one Lutheran pastor like a black rooster in a muster of peacocks." On the occasion of our narrator's brother falling in love: "Little is known even now of the nature of love. ... The newest theories about falling in love explain it prosaically - through the effects of dopamine and noradrenaline on the brain's limbic system. ... He [his brother] changed beyond recognition and displayed signs of the limbic system in motion - a person grows wistful, their awareness of the surrounding world decreases, they become particularly stubborn." Skujins is also a master of metaphor. On the impact upon realization of profound truths: "What strange, unbelievable things can happen in a lifetime! Steel structures collapse, the voices of angels are heard between the panting of hate, the adder slinks away with the king's crown on its head, and a newly realised truth slides across your face like a breeze that barely stirs even your eyelashes." On trying to move on after the war ended: "The shadows of our memories still snaked around our ankles, dragged like heavy hems..."

The two halves of Flesh-Coloured Dominoes are so strikingly dissimilar as to cause the metaphorical equivalent of whiplash. One half is an irreverent, bawdy romp reminiscent of Rabelais that began rich in humor and word play but failed to evolve satisfactorily. This lack of development rendered the Baroness's narrative repetitive and the meandering quality became tiresome. Perhaps this was meant to convey the general lassitude of her social class during that time period. If so then I now understand the impetus for the French Revolution on a visceral level. Meanwhile the other half of this novel is a deeply affecting, thought-provoking, melancholy meditation on the nature of identity, both personal and national, that I thoroughly enjoyed. For example, this is a conversation between our narrator as a boy and his grandfather when German Latvians began returning to Germany before World War II (even this sentence is difficult to construct):

"Is nationality determined by what's in your blood?"
The question must have been surprising, because Grandfather picked up his magnifying glass again and peered at me through it.
"Empress Catherine II, Princess of Anhalt-Zerbst, didn't see Russia once before she turned fifteen. Does that mean that she's not the empress of Russia? Is Hitler not German because Austrian blood, or blood from who knows what other countries, flows through his veins? Around the year 900 the Viking Rollo founded Normandy in northern France. He had a son out of wedlock with some French tanner's daughter; the son became England's William the Conqueror..."
"Then is the concept of nationality non-existent?"
"No, of course not. It's just not one easily explained. The grouping of people into nationalities is a phenomenon in itself...There are often centres of power that crop up in the world that collect and pump up the lesser powers. Until the moment when the totality starts to break up and separate. Connections create devastating tensions."

Indeed. I am left to ponder the possibility that these forcible distinctions will mean the extinction of us all.

Great project book, not necessarily a longarm quilting reference book

I'm such a big fan of Judi's! I've been following her blog for over a year now and think she's the best of the best. I'm a longarm quilter and could only hope to aspire to Judi's talent and creativity. When she announced her book was available, I bought a copy right away. All of that being said, I wanted to write this review to help others. I got my copy in the mail yesterday and am debating about whether to keep it. I was really hoping for a reference book to keep close to my longarm to pull out for ideas when looking at a customer quilt. I don't see that happening with this book.

There were helpful tidbits at the beginning about quilting - what she does to be successful - practice like crazy, always use bobbin thread that matches the top thread, advice for piecing the backing, pressing, things like that. My heart kind of sank a little when the projects section of the book began on page 29. The book really details (and beautifully, I might add), how to piece 6 different quilts that Judi has designed along with directions on how she went about quilting these 6 quilts, many times referring to the CD that comes with the book. Sure, her work is so inspiring and there are ideas that would transfer to other quilts. I just took the title to mean that it was going to be all about the quilting process.

The book doesn't deserve a bad rating just because I was expecting something else. It's a beautiful book with beautiful quilts! It's one of those things, too, that by ordering online and not flipping through it at a book store or quilt shop, that I didn't know it was so centered around the projects. Also, to be completely fair in this review, I wanted to mention that I didn't open the CD that comes with the book because I might be returning it. I don't see myself stopping to pop in the CD & make copies of the full size templates that come on the CD while I'm at the longarm working on customer quilts.

I was hoping it was going to be like the Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters book that I've referred to so much over my first year of longarm quilting.

Judi Madsen's brand-new book, "Quilting Wide-Open Spaces" is a real Winner!

Just received my copy yesterday and stayed up well past Midnight trying to take in ALL her eye-popping quilting designs, which are truly amazing! It wasn't until much later that I realized all the quilting design outlines and the gorgeous quilt patterns themselves were included as printable .PDFs on the included CD. There are 118 pages in all just on the CD alone, making this book/CD combo a real bargain!

Judi Madsen is well-known throughout the quilting community as an exceptionally talented quilt artist with a generous heart to boot. Her latest book epitomizes not only her amazing quilt talent but her wonderful giving spirit.

My Christmas Wish for EVERY new/vintage/aspiring quilter this year is that they will wake up Christmas morning to find this awe-inspiring quilt book in their stocking...don't forget to ask Santa...;-)

Excellent Machine Quilting Reference for Domestic and Longarm Machine Quilters

I have drool all over my computer keyboard, and it is all Judi Madsen's fault. I have been following her blog for about a year now, and I continue to be mesmerized by her approach to machine quilting -- her uncanny ability to create the perfect quilting designs to complement any style of pieced or appliqued quilt that comes her way. I tell myself that, one day when my piecing and applique skills get good enough, maybe I could hire Judi to work her magic on one of my own quilts, but in the meantime I am delighted to finally have been able to purchase this book. Judi walks readers through her creative and technical process with clarity and a fresh, conversational voice, like she's standing right next to your sewing machine, cheering you on. Her enthusiasm and warm personality comes across on every page -- a breath of fresh air. When she breaks down her spectacular quilting step-by-step, anything seems possible -- and I haven't even looked at the additional resources on the included CD yet. I usually don't make the projects in quilting books, just use them as references, but the "wide open spaces" concept is very appealing to me. I spent hours practicing free-motion quilting on fat quarter "practice" quilt sandwiches throughout most of last year, and have nothing to show for that but a pile of samples. Judi's projects are a logical next step in the quilting journey, moving on to simple pieced quilt tops with plenty of "wide open spaces" just waiting for quilty goodness.

I hope Judi writes more books in the future. I would especially love to see a book with before and after photos of her quilts, or possibly several identical quilt tops with totally different quilting designs. Often when viewing a finished quilt with absolutely spectacular quilting, perfectly suited to the quilt, those quilting designs seem like the only possible quilting. I think it's hard for many beginners, myself included, to envision the different quilting possibilities when we're staring at the wilderness of a freshly-finished quilt top and trying to decide what to do with it.
