About the Author

Bea Mikulecky has an MA in TESOL and a Ph.D. in Applied Psycholinguistics from Boston University. She extensively taught developmental reading in high schools and ESL reading in community colleges, where she also directed ESL programs. In addition to co-authoring the Reading Power series, Bea has trained teachers at Harvard University, Simmons College, and the Thorez Institute.

Excellent. Very Practical

I got this book for a grad class in teaching reading and writing (to esl students). This book was fantastic for explaining the theories and concepts behind teaching reading as well as giving sample exercises for every single concept. The exercises could easily be adapted for use in any reading classroom, and they take the guesswork out of lesson planning. It's very nice to have academic support behind the activities that you're using! Although we used it for ESL reading, the introduction at the beginning of the book states that it can be used in a multitude of reading settings, including adult basic literacy and elementary literacy, which makes it even more useful. I very much recommend this book, and I know I will be returning to it for as long as I'm teaching.
