Spivak all over again

Once again Michael Spivak has produced a wonderful mathematical
treasure. This time he has left behind the analysis type approach of 'Calculus' (which is a gem) that he wrote many years ago and had written a book for the beginner. It covers the basics of calculus, and gives the reader a better first introduction than many of the standard textbooks would ever muster. It may be said that it is low on content, but if you have mastered this book, you will have to move on to a much larger text. Then you will miss a book that you can virtually put in your pocket!!

I actually like it alot.

I picked up this book for my AP Physics C class last year. I thought it was a great explanation of basic calculus, although it's true that it doesn't really cover much more than that.
It does, however, cover pretty much all of AP Calculus AB, although its treatment of limits could be a bit more thorough.
If you need a quick guide to calculus, don't hesitate to get this book.

Perfect conceptual introduction

This book provides an excellent conceptual introduction to the basic ideas of calculus. This would be great for parents homeschooling/helping their kids, tutors, teachers introducing calculus to students seeing it for the first time, or an adult coming (back) to math later on in life. There's also a valuable lesson to be learned by the person teaching FROM the book as well; patience! Michael Spivak is a brilliant mathematician. His Calculus textbook is arguably the best one ever written (not kidding) and his differential geometry books are used by many grad programs (even the ones that use Do Carmo are still familiar with Spivak). That someone with his level of mastery can take the time to use pictures of a magnifying glass and intuitive analogies to introduce new ideas is a reminder to be patient with others (and ourselves).
NB: This will not replace your standard calc textbook. You still need Stewart (or Anton) so you can do hundreds of exercises and have the material become second nature. This book serves as a great introduction to the ideas behind single variable calculus. Once you grasp the ideas here and reinforce them via Stewart, I'd move onto Spivak's Calculus text to see what theoretical mathematics is like. There's plenty of computational exercises, but the presentation is much more rigorous (proofs) and there are many non-computational exercises. It's essentially an analysis (or advanced calculus) text, but with a very detailed, slow paced presentation (the end of chapter problems are very challenging, but enlightening).
