There is a growing need for new adhesives for technical and medical applications! The nature uses adhesion in a host of ways and we can learn a great deal from this. Adhesive systems of potential interest need to be thoroughly analyzed and the common underlying principles and unique features of natural adhesives have to be understood.

The first part of this book gives an overview of selected adhesive systems from the plant and animal kingdoms. It describes their structure (morphology), function (secretion), and what kinds of adhesives are produced (composition). Knowledge about biological adhesives raises the question as to how these systems can benefit our daily lives.

The second part of this book focuses on technical and medical applications of biological adhesives and biomimetic systems. The use of renewable biological components in industrial adhesives is also highlighted as is the use of biomimetic and bio-adhesives in basic and applied research. Medical and surgical applications of these adhesives such as wound healing and the bonding of tissues/organs are also covered.

This publication can be readily used in conjunction with the book “Biological Adhesives” by Smith and Callow (2006) which describes the basis of bonding systems and their chemical and mechanical properties and means that readers now have a comprehensive overview of biological adhesive systems and their applications!

About the Author

Dr. Dipl.-Biol. Janek von Byern:

While he was studying at the Johann W. Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main and during several research stays at the private marine research station IFMB in Giglio, Italy, cephalopods and their complexity (flexibility, color adaptation, and intelligence) aroused Janek von Byern’s interest. With his diploma thesis he focused on the pharmacology and histology of the blood circulation system in Sepia officinalis.

Inspired by�Uwe Piatkowski from the IFM-GEOMAR� institute he began to consider the�abstract thought that cephalopods could also�produce glue.�During further marine research stays he met Prof. Dr. J. Ott from the Department of Marine Biology of the University of Vienna and finally moved in 2003 to their Core Cell Imaging and Ultrastructure research facility.

In his PhD he characterized the adhesive system of the pygmy squid Idiosepius and started to analyze the glue components biochemically. Sampling led him to South Africa, Mozambique, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and Australia where he collected different species, which raised new knowledge of other glue-producing animals and their attachment behavior.

Dr. Dipl.-Biol. Ingo Grunwald:

is a research associate and project manager in the "Biomolecular Surfaces and Materials Design" work group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) in Bremen, Germany. The Fraunhofer IFAM is the largest independent research organization in Europe in the area of industrial adhesive bonding technology. Ingo Grunwald's work at the Fraunhofer IFAM focuses on biomimetic materials and biofunctionalized surfaces. He studied biology at University of Hanover (Germany), with biochemistry and molecular biology being his main areas of interest. His Ph.D. work concerned the purification, characterization, and molecular cloning of a new sugar-binding protein. Research time spent at Cancer Research UK and at the TECHNION in Israel broadened his interest in protein interactions, protein analysis, and proteomics. He studied the functionality of material surfaces with designed proteins in the field of nanobiotechnology as part of postdoctoral work at the University of Stuttgart (Germany). Ingo Grunwald has a lectureship in bioanalytical methods and surface biofunctionalization at the University of Bremen (Germany).

I thought this was thorough exam prep book. To the point and helpful. Lots of practice, but it was pricey. I guess it's tough to put a price on your future though.

Some good content but a lot of useless info.,

The technical info (drawings mainly) are great but the "service history" is noting more than a rambling mess of stories about pilots and how they were captured, marched half naked, fed bread by locals and other nonsense that has nothing to do with the aircraft's service. Next time, tell relevant stories about the history or leave it out and charge less,

This book is essentially a reprint with minor changes. Kagero is trying to double dip.

This is the 60th book (No. 3060) in Kagero's Monographs series. The book is an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", square bound, 144 page card cover. The book is devoted to the Dornier Do 17/Do 215, one of three bombers the Luftwaffe started WWII with and the only one of the three that didn't serve to war's end.

The book breaks down into three parts. The first 100 pages are devoted to the background, design, development, and service history of the aircraft. The next 32 pages feature very high quality line drawings primarily in 1/72nd scale but with some fittings drawn bigger. There are a few pages of drawings in 1/96th scale detailing external differences between models. Color profiles and a few plans take up the remainder of the book and the rear cover.

All is excellent and well worth the asking price but I can only award three stars because of Kagero's occasional practice of double dipping (enticing the consumer to buy the same material twice) as in this case.

Seven years ago Kagero published a Do17/Do 215 book in this same series (it was number 39) with the same author. Are there major differences, justifying a new volume in the series? Sadly, no.

The differences are minor. There is a new cover painting. The current volume does not have the masking foil the original did. The text in the current volume is spread over 100 pages instead of the 92 of the original. This permits some additional photos to be added and in fact some photos have been reproduced at a smaller size to squeeze in some more. The drawings are identical but in the current book the Polish captions have been removed leaving only English. The are three additional pages of color profiles and as with the drawings the Polish captions have been removed.

In conclusion, I can only recommend this book if one doesn't already own the original in which case I highly recommend it. If one does own the original there is little point beyond obsessive completism (which I succumb to more often than I would like) to get this newer edition.

One of the best of this series. Overdue subject on WWII. Lots of black and white photos and color profiles are numerous and excellent. Liked description of use in WWII.

Welcome to Wareville

Wareville is an unique little town where magic , “witches, goblins, and ghouls are money in the townspeople’s pockets.” It is also where a nifty witch named Foxxy (Harper) Beck owns the Funky Wheel, a psychedelic roller rink. Inheriting the rink from her deceased father was the best thing that had ever happen to Foxxy, that is until she discovers the dead body of her accountant taped to the floor of the rink. It was pretty obvious that a practitioner of the occult was the murderer. Unfortunately, the hunky detective in charge of the case, (Detective Wyatt Bennett) is convince he has enough evidence to arrest Jeb (Foxxy's close friend and employee ) for the murder,.

There is no way Foxxy is going to let her friend Jeb rot in jail for a crime she is sure he did not commit. With the help of her best friend Paul, her spooky witch grandmother and the very reluctant detective Bennett (soon to be her new boyfriend), she sets out to find the real murderer. However, there a lot of twists and turns before the hidden murderer is finally revealed

This was a great story and I am definitely look forward to the next book in this series. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal romantic mystery.

Harper, also known as Foxy, is the owner of a rollerskating rink in the middle of the small town known as Waresville. At twenty six, she's lost both her mother and the father she never knew. But thanks to her father, he left her his roller rink. Her grandmother, the proud owner of a witch supply store, is her only family. The two have a trying relationship. Harper is trying to be patient with her grandmother and her grandmother is trying to get on her nerves. But since they are family, they tolerate each other.

Harper's world is turned upside down once again when she enters to the roller rink to open for the afternoon only to find the dead body of her accountant in the middle of the rink. Her bouncer is arrested for the crime. Can Harper clear his name before she become the next victim to this murder's black magic?

Overall, I enjoyed this novella. I'm glad that it was combined into one addition. Nothing is more frustrating than getting into a story to only find out that half of it is published for free while the other half is for sale. The characters are amusing, and the plot flows at a good pace.

Potential for a great witch series

This light novella, has the potential to be a great series. It's packed with 70's grooviness, witty witches, adorable weird children (like myself), a budding romance, and a town that I would give everything to live in.

This 70ish page read is packed with a mix of everything, and is a fast, fun read. Some parts of the story were a bit rushed, and I would have liked to got to know the characters, town, and the groovy rink a bit more. The setting is definitely unique, and adds a fun new twist to witchy paranormal romance novels The skating rink, with the cute town, the interaction between the characters is simply magical.

I can not wait to read further adventures of Foxxy, as I enjoyed her character. She is a vibrant oddball, that has some funny comebacks, and just adore her attitude. I hope that future novels will be longer, and have her explore more of her witchy heritage. Gran seems like she is hiding something, and I hope it's some magical twist.

Definitely recommend this to anyone that wants a fast fun read, loves witches, supernatural towns, and paranormal romance.
