One of the Best Android Books I've Read.

This book is fantastic, and even in its early pages will help reframe the way you think about concurrency on Android. The Author uses a smooth, easy to consume writing style to bring through deep insights and historical knowledge on the topic, and manages to be exactly the right kind of tech book-an enjoyable bedtime read that can be digested in small chunks while still delivering deeply technical lessons. Those whose primary programming experience is with Android and Java will be particularly rewarded as the topic is discussed from a variety of angles outside of the normal Java idiom in order to highlight some particular insight about the way Android and Java handle the issues.

One of the best Android books I've read and while it is not for beginners, it will be of extreme benefit novices through masters.

A fantastic analysis of Android's bizarro-java constructs for concurrency. Highly recommend even for people who think they understand the fundamentals (hint, you probably don't understand some concepts like you think you do). What makes it even better is you get the wonderful dry wit from the author which makes some of the dense abstraction concepts a bit easier to bear.

If every programming book were this good, the world would be a better place

This is a fantastic book. It's one of the best programming books I've read, ever.

Disclaimer: I was given a free PDF by the author, whom I have met, in exchange for an honest review.

I might further add that I'm not in the target audience for this book. I'm not an android developer and my knowledge of Java is not especially deep. It is a testament to Meike's skills that those things didn't matter. All of the concepts -- and some of them are quite subtle -- are so clearly explained, and the code examples are so logically laid out and expounded that at no point did I feel lost or overwhelmed.

Mieke's writing is fluid and logical. Each chapter follows the model that was taught to me by my first editor when I wrote my first software manual 3+ decades ago: "I tells ya what I'm going to tell ya, then I tells ya, then I tells ya what I told ya." The overall logic of the book is easy to grasp, as is the logic of each chapter.

Equally important, Meike has mastered the very difficult art of addressing the reader in a confident, sometimes sly, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny voice that at no point becomes snarky or arrogant. The effect is that you both trust him and enjoy his company.

After an engaging Preface, Meike, in Chapter One, gives a very brief history of modern computer architecture and the evolution of (and distinction between) procedural and functional programming languages. Now, you might think that this kind of stuff is filler that can safely be skipped by anyone with any kind of CS background. But I advise that you don't skip it; it's there for a very good reason, and that's to show you how your naive assumptions about concurrency may be wrong, and how a slightly different mental model may be much more helpful.

The naive assumption is that it's your job to keep track of all available computing resources and structure your program to make best use of them. Wrong! That's the job of the compiler-writer.

In Meike's words,

"The purpose of the discussion, up to this point, has been to reframe the idea of concurrency. Concurrency is not a way to make a program run faster. It is not a complex juggling trick that ninja coders use to keep multiple balls in the air at one time. On the contrary, it is the apparent sequential execution of a program that is the complex trick. Sequential execution is an illusion maintained by a cabal of compiler writers and hardware architects. Concurrency is simply the relaxation of a fabricated constraint. In the developer’s environment, where time and order are rigid and implicit constraints, “concurrency” is just another word for “order unspecified”."

The rest of the book is simply an exploration of how to know, given how Android and Java work, (1) when it's OK to relax assumptions about sequential program execution, and (2) the best technique in any situation for indicating "order unspecified."

Throughout, Meike continually uses the technique of showing what one's "naive" assumption might be about how to solve a programming task, and contrasting it with the correct approach. Each example serves as an exemplar of a pattern, and the patterns are diagramed in helpful, clear diagrams. Throughout, the author demonstrates a deep familiarity with all aspects of Java development and Android programming, even down to explaining where Java documentation is wrong about the behavior of certain classes, or how Android implementation has changed ever-so-slightly from one revision to another.

I'm tempted to quote some code examples to give a flavor, but I guess this is already a bit long for one of these kinds of reviews. If you're an Android developer, do yourself a favor a pick up a copy of this book right now. And even if, like me, you just like to read books like this to get a better understanding of how things work, you should seriously consider investing in it as well. It's a real gem.

In late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century Newfoundland, the evolution to colonial self-government within the empire was accompanied by an economic transition from a migratory to a residential fishery. This was the beginning of the modern liberal order for Newfoundland.

The standard view is that the truck system, wherein merchants supplied fishing families with provisions, gear, and so on, against the season's catch, shamefully exploited resident fishermen, as well as planters and servants. Sean Cadigan reviews the economic and social developments of this period from a new perspective. He contends that the persistence of independent commodity production in the fishery of northeast-coast Newfoundland from 1785 to 1855 cannot be attributed to merchant-imposed truck credit practices. He calls for a reassessment of the truck system as a realistic accommodation to the limited possibilities and requirements of the local economy. The rise of the truck system and the household-based fishery was above all a historical outcome which involved the adjustments of settlers, merchants, and governments during a complex period of transition. Elements of the staple model are used to suggest that the resource base of the fishery and the legal institutions of the initial fishing industry limited the ability of fishing families to respond otherwise to exploitation by merchants. Later, reformers struggling for colonial self-government obscured the staple restraints on fishing families in order to discredit fish merchants politically by saying the latter purposefully used truck to impoverish the fishery and prevent agricultural development in order to preserve their hegemony in Newfoundland's economy and society.

Besides newspapers accounts, missionary correspondence, and local government records, Cadigan makes use of court records which have never before been systematically used. These records provide evidence that serves as the basis for his discusssion of family production in the fishery, the unsuccessful attempts by families to diversify production through agriculture, the gender division of labour, and economic development.

con ganas Si Se Puede

Hace un tiempo estaba pasando por una situación bastante triste en mi vida.

Así que me metí a amazon a buscar alguna cosa que me pudiera ayudar.

Llegue a este libro, lo pedí, lo deje olvidado, paso un tiempo, lo retome, me puse a leerlo, me dije porque no darle una oportunidad, así que comencé a poner en práctica las ideas contenidas.

Al principio me di cuenta que debía enfocarme en una sola área primero, por lo que decidí que sería la laboral, al final de cuentas sin dinero es imposible hacer cualquier cosa, así estuve, fijándome metas y programando mi mente como salía aquí. Un día tenía que dar una de esas típicas presentaciones en la empresa, por primera vez no me puse nerviosa, no se que paso, bueno en realidad si se porque no puede haber sido otra cosa, las técnicas de visualización que aprendí con el libro hicieron que ese miedo con toques de angustia que sentía ya no estuvieran más ahí ahora me siento con más calma como más natural, lo que es, simplemente es, tuve que dar un par más de presentaciones y de nuevo no me puse nerviosa, hace dos días me felicitaron por como hable y me ofrecieron un cambio a un nivel de mayor responsabilidad y sueldo por supuesto.

No puedo decir que sea fácil, ya que como todo en la vida se necesita disciplina o quizás más bien un cierto orden para aprender y realizar las técnicas. Pero si se logra tener ese orden para hacer el cambio, estos realmente si suceden.

Como porfin lo logre

Varias veces he intentado bajar de peso, trataba de hacer una dieta pero en un par de días la dejaba.

Sabía que no tenía ningún problema, que era pura falta de motivación y fuerza de voluntad.

Bueno así que trate de buscar algo que me diera las herramientas para poder auto motivarme.

Lo que descubrí fue que cuando uno empieza algo y esta toda motivada es que uno visualiza la vida y a una misma de una forma muy específica, en mi caso fue con mucha luz, muy definido todo, pero me di cuenta que al pasar los días mi imagen mental cambiaba, como que todo se volvía más oscuro, borroso, gris y ya cuando eso se acentuaba, yo perdía totalmente la motivación y dejaba de hacer la dieta.

Lo que hice ahora fue seguir detenidamente las instrucciones del libro, me fije en como quería verme y todos los días en la mañana y en la noche reforzaba esa imagen.

Ese oscurecimiento lo reemplaza por luz, así fue como pude mantener mi motivación, a las dos semanas empecé a notar cambios reales en mi cuerpo, ya después de 3 semanas había bajado 2 kilos, algo que antes hubiera sido imposible, y llegue a la conclusión de que todo pasa por el subconsciente, y el autonocimiento, como veo el mundo es super necesario para saber como modificarlo, y el mundo interior que es como yo veo en mi mente las cosas, es tan valioso como el exterior.

Cuando iba al psicólogo lo pasábamos mucho rato hablando de mis trastornos y cuando estos se habían originado, y cuales eran las características de este, eso me hacía sentir bien, como que me desahogaba y me daba un gran conocimiento de mi misma, pero en la realidad saber todo eso no provocó nunca un cambio en mi, ahora no sé si fue pérdida de tiempo o que, este libro te dice como hacer las cosas, como pasan en tu mente y como puedes provocarlas a conciencia.

About the Author
John A. Tracy is Professor of Accounting, Emeritus, in the College of Business and Administration at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Before his 35-year tenure at Boulder he was on the business faculty for 4 years at the University of California in Berkeley. He has served as staff accountant at Ernst & Young and is the author of several books on accounting, including The Fast Forward MBA in Finance and How To Read a Financial Report. Dr Tracy received his MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin and is a CPA in Colorado.

Colin Barrow is Head of the Enterprise Group at Cranfield School of Management, where he teaches entrepreneurship on the MBA and other programmes. He is also a visiting professor at business schools in the US, Asia, France, and Austria. His books on entrepreneurship and small business have been translated into 15 languages including Russian and Chinese. He worked with Microsoft to incorporate the business planning model used in his teaching programmes into the software program, Microsoft Business Planner, now bundled with Office. He is a regular contributor to newspapers, periodicals, and academic journals such as The Financial Times, The Guardian, Management Today, and the International Small Business Journal.
Thousands of students have passed through Colin’s start-up and business growth programmes, raising millions in new capital and going on to run successful and thriving enterprises. He is a non-executive director of two venture capital funds, on the board of several small businesses, and serves on a number of Government Task Forces.

About the Author

Charles A. Brau received his B.A. in Engineering from Cornell University and his M.A. (in Engineering) and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University. In the course of his career, he has been a theorist, an experimenter, a manager, and currently a professor of physics at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He focuses his research on free-electron lasers (FEL) and electron beams. He became a program manager of the FEL program at Los Alamos National Laboratory and then a director of the FEL Center at Vanderbilt University. In 1988 he was a visiting scientist in the Department of Nuclear Physics at the University of Oxford in England. He is an author of 7 patents and numerous publications, including 2 books. He is also a fellow of American Physical Society.

Disappointing...

The moment the professor in our class told us that instead of Jackson we'd be using another book I couldn't hide my joyous feelings. I ordered Brau's book (the recommended for our e&m course) and waited...

After living 3 months with this book all I have to say is how disappointed I feel. I thought it would be a really modern e&m book. In some aspects it is. The material it covers is pretty interesting. But the book has so many mistakes that get very frustrating. Keep in mind that at the back cover an errata webpage is referred (with several pages of corrections!). Trust me, you'll need it. Also, most of the problems are exactly the opposite of Jackson's - too easy, although I must say that I like the approach "Using A prove that B holds" - by knowing the result you can feel more confident when solving a problem.

In short, I read the book only when I HAD TO - meaning when we were assigned problems from it. I was oscillating between this and Jackson... Now I wish we had used the second all the way through...

Modern treatment of classical electrodynamics

In most textbooks, including Jackson's, Maxwell's equations are derived empirically
through Coulomb's law, the law of Biot and Savart, Faraday's law, and Maxwell's
inclusion of displacement current. This approach has been presented again to most of
physics graduate students; However, using this approach to graduate student will diminish much of the excitement and enthusiasm and ignore the entirely new way to look at from the relativistic point of view where electric and magnetic fields are really different aspects of same physical quantity.

Brau's arrangement of the text, was influenced by that of Landau and Lifshitz, developed much easier version with a theoretically more elegant
approach: a treatment of the electromagnetic fields which emphasizes its relativistic appects from the beginning.

Also, Charles A. Brau gathers valuable information from such classic texts as Max Born and Emil Wolf's Principles of Optics, Joseph W. Goodman's Introduction to Fourier Optics, and L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz's The Classical Theory of Fields, Jackson's classical book, and packages it all into one very readable volume.

About the Author
BEN RASKIN is the Head of Horticulture at the Soil Association in the UK, and a father to two. He runs courses and training on organic growing and launched the Soil Association's flagship Organic Apprenticeship Scheme in 2007. Ben developed an interest in gardening while working on an organic vineyard in northern Italy and has worked in horticulture for eighteen years.

Harvard Business School professor Kotter, author of the bestselling Leading Change (1996), teams up with executive Rathgeber to offer his contribution to the "business fable" genre. Kotter presents his framework for an effective corporate change initiative through the tale of a colony of Antarctic penguins facing danger-inspired, perhaps, by today's real-life global warming crisis (or, perhaps, by March of the Penguins' box office). Under the leadership of one particularly astute bird, a small team of penguins with varied personalities and leadership skills implement a thoughtful plan for coaxing the other birds in their colony through a time of necessary but wrenching change. The logic of Kotter's fictional framework is wobbly at times-his characters live and act very much like real penguins except that one carries a briefcase and another ("the Professor") cites articles from scholarly journals-and the whimsical tone will not be to everyone's taste. However, this light, quick read should fulfill its intended purpose: to serve as a springboard for group discussions about corporate culture, group dynamics and the challenges of change.

“Penguins illustrate how to conquer change

At first glance, Our Iceberg Is Melting seems easy to dismiss as an attempt to fuse a few hot topics - global warming, marching penguins - into a Who Moved My Cheese? fable-as-business-lesson best seller.

But this penguin parable has a pedigree in the form of Harvard Business School's John Kotter, author of Leading Change, the 1996 business guide that also sported our flat-footed, feathered friends on the cover. The Heart of Change was his 2002 follow-up.

This time out, Kotter moves the penguins inside, using how a colony of them copes with a potential catastrophe - yes, their iceberg is melting - to illustrate his eight-step process of successful change.

Their story is short and peppered with the personalities organizations inevitably include: the naysayers and nitpickers, the innovators and agitators, the leaders and followers. The idea is that everyone in a group must play a role in navigating change.

In that vein, Kotter and co-author Holger Rathgeber write that their goal is to use a good story with visual stimuli (full-color, cartoon-like illustrations) to influence a broad range of people to better handle change and produce results. In other words, companies should buy a copy for everyone from the CEO to the stock clerk.

This approach paid off for Spencer Johnson of Who Moved My Cheese?, who writes the foreword.

Kotter's process advocates quick action to confront issues, group thinking and the buy-in of the whole organization. The goal: replace old habits with new behaviors and make them stick.

Oh, no a melting iceberg!

I was attracted to this book because...
I’m researching leading with a sense of urgency and I have been reading a lot of John Kotter. I was intrigued by the fable concept.

Things I liked about this book
As a fable, it tells a great story of these penguins,coming together and finding a way to reasonably work and find a solution to their community’s impending problem.

Why you should read this book
This book is a great encouragement that if we listen to each other and find ways to work together, we can solve many problems in community.

The "Penguin Book" Knows All...

Change Management 101. Of all the principles, models, and frameworks I've learned through my recently completed MBA program, the Kotter model for change management will undoubtedly stick with me the most. And I really believe that this book is the reason for that resonance.

Written in a style that everyone can understand, even possibly my 3 year old daughter, this short, illustrated book, offers a crash course in effective change management. I couldn't help but look at my organization in a different light after walking through the 8 steps explained in the book. Ever since, I can asses any new situation where change is in question by asking how it applies to the "penguin book." If you haven't read this and are involved in any organization that could benefit from any type of change, I highly recommend you give it a read.

Excellent book for facing change:
I work as a psychiatrist with persons with intellectual developmental disorder(IDD) (earlier called mental handicap) and their families. The chief challenge of my work is to bring a positive approach to training efforts by the parents. As parents with a ‘special child’ parents face many challenges in bringing up and in planning for the child’s future. This responsibility is not what parents wanted, when the child was born into their family. The needs of ‘special child’ requires parents to think completely differently about a number of areas like day to day care, training the child, schooling, health care, planning for the future etc. It is these challenges that require you to take up the challenges and find new ways of succeed.
The central theme of my work, is to EMPOWER YOUR CHILD AND YOUR FAMILY TO FACE THE CHALLENGES.
It is in this context, that the book ‘Our iceberg is melting’ has a special meaning to you and your family.
Most parents pass through life denying the ‘special’ needs of your child. From the book, parents learn to accept the situation, by accepting your child’s ‘special’ needs that they can be of greatest help to him/her.
The book introduces the 8 principles of problem solving, which is useful to parents in a slightly modified form, as below.
1. Recognise the special needs of your child and importance of training
2. Pull together all members of your family
3. Develop a vision for your child and a Strategy
4. Reach out professionals for help and support
5. Acquire skills to train your child
6. Plan for Short-term gains
7. Don't give up
8. Make effort continuous and regular.
