Tons of information, impossible to read

This is one of the most confusing chemistry books I have ever read. The chapter summaries are two pages of fill-in-the blank guesswork, half-referencing the material in the book. Literally, most of it is a blank essay with a few sentences expecting you to fill in. The problems and questions section references sections in the book which contain no relation to the current problem. I actually had one problem that wasn't even written as a question or problem. The problem was written as "In a 1 molar solution of acetic acid, only about .5 percent of the acid is ionized to produce acetate ion and a hydrogen ion." No questions, or math or stoichiometry. That was it.

The book has a lot of available information, but it's such a jumbled horrible mess it's hard to really get anything worth obtaining. I got this book for my environmental class, and the teacher thinks it's a good idea to assign most of his homework from it. I got much more from Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity, I'd rather have had that as the assigned book for class.

I'm pretty ticked I was forced to waste my money on this crap.

Worst piece of literature ...ever.

Well after ordering this book, despite the bad reviews, my prof decided we still should buy it. After just looking at the first few chapters there were numerous typos,equations, and even structures of chemical elements. I advise against this book for anyone, It says that it is a renewed version however it is much worse.

It asks questions in the back of the chapter that it does not provide the answer to anywhere in the chapter. More often than not I have to google search the answer because it is faster and more clearly presented. We organized a book burning after the term was over.

Good book but missing info!!!!!!!

This is a great ref book for Jewelry Companies that are long gone, their marks and company background. However it is missing some well known companies from the 50's and 60's but to it's credit there are also marks that ARE included that belong to little known companies. The layout could be improved as sometimes companies marked with a logo, and not the name, finding the logo means you have to search the whole book if you don't know who it was made by. That being said the book is a must have for all jewelry collectors as the info contained within is NOT the opinion of the author, it is taken from actual historical books, and vintage Trade guides etc.

Excellent guide for making digital Black & White images

A couple of months back I got an itch to try to better understand how to produce stunning Black & White photos using my digital camera. I was not satisfied with using the B&W modes offered on the camera. I purchased several good books on the subject. They each offered something worthwhile but focused more on concepts than practical, hands on information. Then I stumbled on
"Black & White Digital Photography Made Easy". I love this book. It teaches you in very concise instructions how to create beautiful B&W images. This book teaches you to use Photoshop to create stunning black and white photos. It offers dozens of extremely useful tips and methods that go far beyond the camera's B&W mode or simply backing down the saturation control in some editing program. It often shows you how to accomplish a particular look via several different approaches. It is packed with fantastic example photos and includes a CD with very well done video lessons. This book is one of the best books I have found for its purpose. I highly recommend it.

This is a well-conceived and well-executed reference for both business/government leaders, computer security, information assurance (IA) professionals who want a timely review and critical discussion of the range of threats and IA principles/methods to meet the challenges to today’s IT systems.

The book offers some practical frameworks and methodologies for approaching both legacy and emerging information technologies such as data-mining, cloud-based, client/server applications, all toward the focus of achieving and sustaining competitive advantage. This book is exemplary about in the dual focus on both (1) organizational leaders and (2) IT operations/assurance professionals, both of whom have information assurance concerns. The book offers a range of grounded examples and thought-provoking case discussions with well-framed questions to stimulate critical thought among business leaders and IA professionals.

This diversity of reader audiences is a profound strength of this particular work. It is one of these information assurance books that belongs on your professional book-stand, in order to serve as a ready reference for the thoughtful application of information assurance; principles, frameworks and controls to meet our dynamic IT security challenges. The notion of “information assurance” is not necessarily synonymous with information security. In Information Assurance Handbook: Effective Computer Security and Risk Management Strategies, authors Corey Schou and Steven Hernandez examine the subtle differences.

Information assurance is about assuring information and managing risks related to all aspects of the data. It takes a broader approach to the topic, as opposed to just focusing on security from a policy and firewall perspective.

This book provides a look at the tools and techniques that are needed to protect data. The dense volume covers the entire range of information assurance topics, including basic principles and concepts, information assurance management systems, information assurance in system development, and acquisition and information assurance awareness, training, and education. The book also reviews various information security monitoring tools and how to use them.

Those looking for an excellent reference on the topic that is both broad and deep will find that Information Assurance Handbook fits the bill.

One of the Great Books on how the British fought Crimean War "Charge of the Light Brigade"

Many a historian rate this as a must read book. Written in the early 1900's it is still being published and read to this day. It is the story of the Charge of the Light Birgade. If you are into British History this is a must read. I read the book over 30 years ago when a college friend recommended it. I ordered it on Amazon a year ago to re-read it, then gave it to a friend lived in Scotland and who is into history. He in turn sent it to his son who makes a living playing bagpipes in Colorado. The book gets into the British psychic, and how command was purchased not always deserved. The battles of the Crimean War have amazed scholars and casual readers alike. The book deals with how the British Office thought and carried out orders as well as details on the battles themselves.

All the Reasons Why

"The Reason Why" by Cecil Woodham-Smith and written in 1954 came as a recommendation through a friend of mine who is currently a major in the British Army. My familiarity with the Charge of the Light Brigade, which occurred during the British, French, and Turkish campaign against the Russians during the Crimean War up until reading this book was lifted from visual snippets from my childhood when my dad would watch the 1936 Hollywood production with Errol Flynn, by the same name, but taking place during the wrong war for the wrong reasons with all the wrong characters, and the often quoted Tennyson poem from which the title originates.

"Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:

I'm glad I read this book and straightened out my truly twisted sense of British history on this one. I also learned a great deal more. This book is a masterpiece and I will feebly attempt to explain why. To understand what really happened during the Battle of Balaclava, Woodham-Smith starts to illustrate the political and military culture within Britain starting just after the turn of the Century and then directly after the British victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. It is very important to understand that British officers did not attend formal professional military schools nor did they move up through the ranks, they bought their commissions and either learned in the field, engaged in self-study if they were interested in subjects such as warfare, or they lead and managed men based on instinct. Officership was entrusted to and required of only the upper social strata -- those who had a stake in the country were those best fit to lead the military, and more importantly were those less likely to turn the military against the social elite, themselves. This was how the stability of the British aristocracy was balanced and maintained -- in peacetime it works -- the military is not going to over-throw the country. During times of war -- it also works since the military with it's sabre now unsheathed, is typically sent abroad. When sound military leaders emerge and victories are secured, the system is self ratifying. When defeats occur abroad, however, the facts can be easily distorted to hide the incompetence of the officer elite and then too the system ratifies itself, or the aristocracy quietly takes care of it's own. The reason why, not the title but the reason the Light Brigade trotted ceremoniously, not galloped, into the valley of death had everything to do with why the British system of officership was a failure and must be changed.

The book is a masterpiece because it combines the domestic sagas of a Jane Austen novel complete with social circles, sex-scandals, and racial prejudices into a great discription of the reality of a military campaign in progress. Not just from the tactical descriptions of the battles as they were set-up and ensued but the logistics of supporting the infantry and the cavalry to get to those battles. After she describes in great detail the unlikely British victory at the Battle of Alma she quotes the Duke of Wellington who said, "Next to a battle lost, there is nothing more dreadful than a battle won", and from her descriptions of the pain and human suffering inflicted on both sides, the Duke was right. Yet Woodham-Smith adds even more to this book, the pure high drama of military incompetence at it's highest as Lord Raglan unwitting observes a battle unfold from his perch deep behind Russian, the enemy, lines. And of Lord Lucan, who want's to be in charge but is never in the right place at the right time. And to the Charge itself, when Captain Edward Nolan, who carried the charge order to Lord Cardigan, and who in a moment of his own clarity, the coup d'oeil that he himself had written about in the calvary manuals he had penned, gallops to the front of the charge to correct Cardigan's fatal misinterpretation of the charge and is ironically cut down by canon fire just before being able to divert the Light Brigade's direction away from the valley of death. High drama, ferocious battle, scandal, intrigue, incompetence, and an outcome that would forever change the way we train our military officers. A must read for every member of the military -- grunt to general officer, for every history buff, and for those who just like to poke fun at the British way of doing business or to understand why it is they do business their way.

Great read for anyone inetrested in 19th century Brittish History and/or military history in general

Great book. This work illuminates a world during the first half of 19th Britain and of Ireland as well. Plus, it does exactly what the title says - it explains the reasons why the charge of the light brigade was made. But, you will learn a lot more about the main people involved, their lives and personalities. This is indeed a wonderful story very well told.
