Very practical, helpful workbook to strengthen those social skill muscles!

This book has a lot of engaging activities and practical suggestions on how to make friends. It was wonderful sitting down with my daughter and working through some of the chapters together. We discussed certain topics that she want to dive into, and it was real bonding experience. Her confidence grew. She always had me setting up play dates when she was younger. However, now that we have moved to a new area and she is older, she had to make friends on her own for the first time. This workbook really helped develop her social skills! She keeps it on her desk at home and references it on occasion. I highly recommend it.

Great book for girls

My daughter struggles with friendships and seems to go after the Queen Bee type of friends. She isn't as socially adept as some of the other girls her age and needed some guidance in what makes a good friend. Trying to instill good habits now is important. this book provides some wonderful activities that your daughter can work on alone and some that you and she can work on together.

Some of the activities were a bit elementary for her (she is 10) so we just skipped those.

As a therapist, I use this book (and others in the series) as part of my therapy with children. The various worksheets are a great way to jump start a session and it provides the children and parents with something tangible to take home afterwards.

About the Author
Bethany McLean is an investigative journalist known for her work on the Enron scandal and the 2008 financial crisis. In 2001 as a young reporter at Fortune magazine, where she eventually became an editor at large, she wrote "Is Enron Overpriced?," one of the first skeptical articles about Enron. After the company collapsed into bankruptcy, she coauthored the bestseller, The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron with her Fortune colleague Peter Elkin. A documentary based on the book was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006. Her most recent book, which she coauthored with New York Times columnist Joe Nocera, is All the Devils Are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis. Prior to joining Fortune she had been an investment analyst at Goldman Sachs. She is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, a columnist for Fortune.com and a contributor to CNBC. A graduate of Williams College, she lives in Chicago.

Best Book Ever Read Because of Bonus Underlying Enlightenment of Our Political Machinery

This would have to be one of the best books I've ever read. Not exactly for the reason you would think though. This book belongs in the hand of every teenager or adult that plans on being involved more in our political system (this should be everyone). The only way this whole saga could have continued for 7 years as of today (Happy Anniversary!), is because of a decayed political system we are in. So many things could be improved in our housing system, yet the politicians and special interest groups have to spend all their efforts fending each other off, instead of fixing the problems. Bethany expertly puts together the real world facts that provide the best example by far of what broken politics is doing to our country. I don't think it was her goal, but that's what you get when you lay out the facts in this debacle. So for anyone out there looking for an exciting way to care more about our political system, this is it. This story is what got me off the bench. Hopefully, this gets in the hands of a bright, young star with fresh ideas that has what it takes to better the system.

As far as the housing specifics in this book, it was fabulous. This is about as close as you can get to a 50/50 non-partisan look at the GSEs. It's almost impossible to do, because there really is no middle ground in all of this. The book lays out the facts quite nicely and leaves both sides evenly wanting to tell much more of their story. That's what makes it a book for the masses though, not a manifesto. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I consider it required learning.

Brief Update of Fannie & Freddie ( although nothing's really changed)

This is a very brief (161 pages) update on the status of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, 6 years after the federal takeover. Nothing has really changed, which is the author's point. They clearly were at the center of the financial crisis, and all of the other major financial institutions that also were have changed dramatically; why are the GSEs still sitting in limbo? The reason turns out to be that Congress can't agree on what the fix should be, or can't bite the bullet and face up to the needed changes. Progressives want the subsidy of affordable housing maintained; free market believers want it ended; good-government moderates try to craft a compromise solution but the ideologues won't compromise - same old, same old. Meanwhile the Treasury keeps draining all the money the GSEs bring in, and the amount is so large that no one in D.C. wants to see it disappear. So the status quo continues.

McLean is best at laying out where the various politicians, ex- White House officials, interest groups, etc stand. She also shows a fair appreciation of the wrong done to holders of stock in the entities by the government's over-reaching once it took them over. It struck me as a fairly balanced presentation of the issues and where people stand on them. The book is written at a business-magazine level, not a single chart or graphic, very easy to read, a lot of material digested for the reader. At the same time, not an enormous amount of fresh insight.

Brilliant update on the role of the mortgage giants in the financial crisis and after

Brilliant and concise overview of what has happened to mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac since the financial crisis. I'm retired from high-level positions in handling mortgage portfolios, and it's my considered professional opinion that Bethany nails it on the key financial and political issues. She has a very accurate perspective on the role of these giants both before and after the conservatorships. I'm more concerned than ever after reading this that the government's housing policies distort markets and unnecessarily drive/limit the lifestyle choices of individuals. It's a great book and a quick read on issues that have been out of the mainstream awareness for several years now.

interesting to some

There is a bit of bit of history, I liked that, then the unexplained or the just out there. I also like that, so if you want a book with just answers then pick another but if you like the unexplained, things that pop thoughts in your head then reason. I am new to amateur radio and enjoy reading about different events and stories with a ham radio flair, so I enjoyed the read and it was worth my time.

Very Interesting Reading of Mysteries of the Ether

I was not too interested in this book until I got into the interesting facts brought by the author. Each topic was presented in clear facts with interesting results. If you want to not just learn Ham Radio, this book will open new ideas as to how things started and who was there in the beginning but didn't get noticed until now. Good reading overall! This is a nice computation of fun and interesting shortwave stories. Many of these mysteries I have not heard of and in turn told it others who have an interest in the shortwave hobby. Plan to listen for a few myself.

The pagination and figure numbering have been arranged to run sequentially, which means that Volume II picks up exactly where Volume I left off, and there is a comprehensive Index in the back of Volume II which covers both volumes. Volume II includes documented information about Dr Werner Gruner, the inventor of both the MG42 and the MG45, and the other German weapons specialists who were invited to live and work in Soviet Russia for several years after the war. Some of this material, which is of great interest to all students of small arms, was apparently stolen from the secret weapons factory in Izhevsk many years ago. Also included is a transcript of the interview which Dr Gruner granted to the Dresden Military Museum in 1991, only a few years before his death. As an aid to collectors attempting to avoid the rising tide of fakes and reproductions we offer in these two volumes the most comprehensive and authoritative study of German machinegun models, components and accessories ever published, a study of which will materially aid in the search for genuine artefacts of lasting value.

A worthy follow-up to the original

The first volume of this series, MG-34 MG-42, German Universal Machineguns, is one of the best gun books ever written. Fully illustrated, it was clearly the product of years of intensive research. Given that, it seems like it would be a hard act to follow. Folke Myrvang has done just that though, and this book was very much a worthwhile addition to my library.

Volume 2 doesn't pick up exactly where Volume 1 ended, rather, it fills in a lot of the material that surrounds the topic of German machineguns. It covers a great deal of the interwar period, specifically the modifications done to Maxim guns, as well as limited production guns the German army tried out. It also goes a great deal into postwar produced copies of the German weapons, and the various accessories associated with all of the guns covered, even more than the first volume did. This book stresses the universality of the weapons, and you see a lot of interesting period photos that really show the guns in use, along with a variety of mountings illustrating just how adaptable the gun really was.

The text is quite clear, and the formatting makes sense, so it is a very readable book. The book is heavily illustrated in color, and features a nice table of contents that covers both volumes. It is hardbound like all Collector Grade books, and comes with an especially durable dust jacket. The paper is of good quality, as is the binding, and it will last a lifetime. I can't really think of anything that could be improved with this book.

If you are in to German weapons, or machineguns in general, I would suggest getting this book while you can. I will never be selling my copy, but if this thing ever goes out of print, it will undoubtedly soar in price.

This book is a reprint of Springer's description of the life of a typical logger in Maine in the early Nineteenth Century. It is divided into two parts, "Forest Life" and "River Life," reflecting the way in which the logger's year was divided into harvesting trees and getting them down the river to the mills. Springer provides fascinating information about the daily life of loggers, from how camps were constructed, to the division of labor at the camps, to how the loggers were greeted at the end of the season in the mill towns as they brought the season's harvest in. He describes how the oxen teams were brought into camp, and the additional hazards and challenges of working with the oxen. He records details of camp cooking, and how the Sabbath was observed at camp, as well as how enormous trees were brought down with only axes. One comes away from reading this book with a sense of awe, that such feats were accomplished with such primitive equipment, in locations that were so remote. Nineteenth Century logging took a degree of toughness that is difficult to even imagine in today's world.
