"The Art of Zen" is a beautiful, beautiful book and has taken its place on my read-again-and-again bookshelf. The 200+ page book is not only packed with the history of zen in Japan as exemplified by the major zen monk artists but complemented by many examples of their art. The history is divided into seven major periods that discussed the political and cultural climate of Japan as well as the philosophic perspective of Zen Buddhism.
There are extensive biographies of each of the major monk artists with examples of the work and, often times, their poetry. For example, the death poem of Ryonen, one of zen nuns, reads, "In the autumn of my 66th year, I've already lived a long time- The intense moonlight is bright upon my face. There's no need to discuss the principles of koan study; Just listen carefully to the wind outside the pines and cedars."
In addition, Addis brings an artist's eye to the paintings and his commentaries on technique, execution and innovation are enlightening (no pun intended)and help to explain how zen seeks to express the "inexpressible."
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Zen, in art, in the Japanese culture or with a desire to better understand the view of life seen by awakened men and women.

About the Author
Ryan is the founder of Untold Entertainment Inc., a boutique game development studio in the heart of downtown Toronto. Ryan got his start at a Canadian television broadcaster creating small, simple games for kids and preschoolers. By the time he was through, he had built over fifty games for a wide range of clients including McDonalds, Hasbro, Lego, Proctor and Gamble, Nickelodeon, and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. These games ran the gamut from simple slider puzzles, memory games, and contest entry mechanics to tile-based graphic adventure games and massively multiplayer virtual worlds. Ryan often leveraged his theatre background to perform on-camera in promotional spots for Microsoft and Nintendo. He spent a number of years moonlighting as a video game journalist under the cartoonish moniker "MrSock". Ryan founded Untold Entertainment Inc. in 2007 and has continued to develop great kids' content with broadcasters and independent television producers to help extend their on-air brands online. He packs the company's popular blog with tutorials, designer diaries, and insights into the world of independent game development, employing his signature biting wit and ludicrous photo captions. Through Untold Entertainment, Ryan is developing a number of original properties, which include: Interrupting Cow Trivia, an online multiplayer trivia game; Spellirium, a word puzzle/adventure game hybrid; UGAGS, the Untold Graphic Adventure Game System; and Kahoots, a fun crime-themed puzzle game modeled entirely in clay. Review Unity 3D Game Development by Example, Beginner's Guide by Ryan Henson Creighton

Let me start right off by saying that this book is excellent. If you paid attention to the title where it says "Beginner's Guide", you'll be very pleased with this book. In particular, for a beginner, the pacing of the book is perfect. The game examples that you create are nothing to get excited about, but that's not really the point. The main point is if you are a complete beginner to Unity and to writing Javascript within Unity, then as far as I know this is the best book available. Now that I have that out of the way, I'll veer slightly off topic.

I currently have two games published on the Xbox 360 in the Indie Games section. They are Acid Rain and Acid Rain Heroes. I am a huge huge Xbox 360 fan. When Microsoft announced XNA and the Indie Game marketplace I knew it was time for me to dust the cobwebs out of my brain and learn programming again after a 20+ year hiatus. I previously developed Paladin's Legacy and got it published back in 1985. I spent 2 years learning C#, XNA and numerous audio and graphics applications in order to publish my games on the 360. I even formed a company, PermaFrost Gaming. And all during my development, I watched as Microsoft fumbled and stumbled and most likely even intentionally sabotaged their own Indie Marketplace strategy. They changed the name. They changed the pricing structure (lowering it to be competitive). But ultimately as a business model, the Indie Game Marketplace on 360 is a failure. As a hobby location for creation and distribution of games, it's a massive success. Existing digital distribution models have proven that you can't put up a bunch of barriers and expect mass adoption of a marketplace. Barriers like, MS requires you to buy points in order to purchase anything on the 360. Indie games have a very limited 3 tiered pricing model and there is no free option. Indie games don't have access to some of the most attractive features available on Xbox Live (Achievements). Indie games by default are under 18 restricted. My current view is if you want to learn C#, build 2D games and distribute them as a hobbyist, then XNA may be your thing. But if you have aspirations of a successful business and plan to delve into 3D game development, then Unity is the better choice. This brings me to this current review.

I made the switch to Unity because Unity allows me to further my knowledge of C# but develop and distribute games on multiple platforms. Multi-platform development is the future...if you intend to make a business of game development. And this book is the perfect place to start.

Ryan starts the book off by giving the prerequisite indie game developer warnings. I love these quotes, "I don't want to set my sights too high, so I'm going to make a game like Gran Turismo, except with fewer cars." and "I'm going to build World of Warcraft with fewer class and about half the items." He devotes the first couple of chapters to explaining the core mechanics of games and establishing realistic expectations for beginner game developers. By chapter 3, you're already developing your first game prototype in 3D. That's the power of Unity! After finishing chapter 4, I just laughed out loud. Ryan humorously quips, "Worst. Game. Ever." My thought was, I can't believe what I just created in 2 short chapters. Awesome! For the record, in XNA, I intentionally avoided 3D. Even with the XNA framework library at my disposal, hand coding 3D cameras, lights, viewports, 3D model importing etc. etc. was and still is way over my head. I could go on and on...... XNA doesn't have a built in physics solution or a particle solution or a menu creation solution but I'll stop and just say that Unity has all of that stuff built in along with almost universal 3D model, audio and texture import functionality. (even native Photoshop files .PSD) I'm not embarrassed to say WOW!

At this point, I'm just going to highlight the things I think Ryan really got right in this book. These are things I sticky noted for future reference. In chapter 4, how to display variables in the editor for code debugging. You use Debug.log(). In chapters 5-7, using the GUI (Graphical User Interface) tools in Unity. I would have preferred that Ryan used the GUI feature to build an actual game menu system instead of an entire game. But one could argue that he killed two birds with one stone by creating a 2D game and a simple menu system all at once using the GUI system.

In chapter 8, you begin crafting your first real 3D game. He covers 3D Meshes, physics (rigidbodies and colliders) and the FBXImporter used to import models from Blender. Unity can import from numerous 3D modeling applications. Blender happens to be free which is pretty cool. He covers the use of Tags which helps you identify game objects through code. In chapters 9-10, you begin another 3D game and get introduced to the amazing particle system, Prefabs and audio in Unity. Prefabs allow you to craft multi-component/object Game Objects and then make an unlimited number of copies of that original multi-part creation. By making changes to just the original Prefab, your changes are automatically propagated to all prefab copies in all scenes in your game. In C#, it's the same idea as creating a class with a bunch of stuff and then instantiating that class numerous times in a list or an array thus resulting in multiple copies. Unity is basically perfecting or evolving the idea of Object Oriented Programming with a visual representation in the Unity editor......and calling it a Prefab. And that's really cool!

In chapter 11, Ryan introduces the multiple camera setup and the use of layers to control what those cameras see/display. Yes that's right, Unity allows you to use multiple cameras using layers to define what objects are seen by each camera. Simply assign a depth value to establish which camera is rendered in what order. I don't even want to think about the complexity of that in XNA.

Finally in chapter 12, Ryan goes back to the game you created in chapter 8 and introduces us to lights, more layers, more cameras and using the animation editor to animate one of the cameras in order to simulate a 1st person 3D walking effect.

Again, the book is all paced perfectly introducing us to new features in Unity with each few chapters. The Javascript coding is kept simple and very understandable.

I highly recommend this book to any beginning game developer.

Fantastic beginners book & good for iPhone games.

I'm an iPhone app developer and publisher, I've been wanting to get into Unity 3D for ages for iPhone games, and this book is a brilliant start. Following this book I had a bouncing ball running in 3D on my iPhone using Unity 3 after about 1hr of reading and tinkering, and already thats about 30% the way to a game I'm planning to prototype! Humorous and easy to follow writting style, and the basic game prototypes the book works through are perfect to get you started building games in Unity - especially the casual 2D gameplay games that have been so successful on iPhone (ie Angry Doodle Pocket). Its also a good compliment to the other Unity book which is more focused on first person perspective 3D worlds. (Note that Unity for iPhone doesn't have the terrain modeling features, and the examples in this book don't need that feature :-)

Diggin' It So Far

This is a darn good introduction to Unity, or even game development in general. It is very well organized, and is both easy and fun to read. I am about halfway through the book and already feel very empowered. Instead of leading you through making one big game like Will Goldstone's Unity Game Development Essentials, you make a handful of bite-sized games to keep it simple. The author is very good about not cluttering the book with unnecessary information, but fully explains important concepts when appropriate. Clarity, substance and a healthy dose of humor make this a must-have for starting Unity. It proves you don't need a CS or 3D Animation degree to get into game development.

A RING-SIDE SEAT WITH LEADING MINDS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

I did not know about this book until I read Jack Beatty's THE WORLD ACCORDING TO PETER DRUCKER. I thought that the excerpts from ADVENTURES OF A BYSTANDER were the best part of Beatty's book. Thus, encouraged, I ordered a copy on Amazon.com and sat down to read. What a great surprise! I felt I knew a lot of Peter Drucker stories, from having met him many times. It looked like I had missed most of the best ones. I was also impressed to learn the places where he first learned many of his most important observations, such as the power of asking the right questions and following through (from his fourth grade teacher, Miss Sophie). There are several chapters in the book that are worth the price of the book, such as the chapters about Sigmund Freud, General Motors, Henry Luce, and the rise of Nazism in Austria and Germany. As a history major, I felt I knew a lot about the people and places he talks about, but I was wrong. I had been sold a bill of goods by people who were not there, as Professor Drucker was. I finished the book wishing he would write a longer autobiography that would capture more of Professor Drucker's remarkable life. He apparently turned down more good jobs before he was 30 than most people would ever have offered to them in 100 lifetimes. This book also helps explain why Professor Drucker has been a seminal thinker for three generations of Americans. His first bestseller in English came out when he was only 30, and only a few years away from his native Austria. What an amazing life Professor Drucker has lived! Until you read this book, you will not know how amazing, and you will have missed a wonderful book -- probably his most intriguing and interesting. Get this book now! If you have not read much of Professor Drucker's work, I suggest you read THE WORLD ACCORDING TO PETER DRUCKER next. It is an invaluable guide to all of Professor Drucker's writing.

Peter Drucker's life and Management Theory

This book tells stories about figures in Drucker's life that influenced his thinking. The book is partitioned in episodes relating to the times he spent in Vienna, Frankfurt, London and the US. Drucker was forced to make up his mind on the Nazi threats while living in Vienna and Frankfurt. He left for England and later for the US, when the Nazis came to power in 1933. He realized that the liberal 19th century had definitely come to an end and that not only his future but that of Western civilization was at stake. Some of his intellectual companions portrayed in the book shared his concerns but came to different conclusions on how to abate the danger facing Germany and Europe.
The book opens with portraits of Viennese people like his grandmother and teachers that inspired him in later life. Intellectual forces in his youth like Freud, Marxism, Stalinism, rural sociology and Prussian Junckerdum are discussed by describing persons holding these ideas. However, he rejects them all as ideologies that wanted to achieve salvation by society. The world of investment banking he encountered in his London years is painted by pictures of men, who made decisions unbridled by ideology. His US years also portrays men of action. Drucker's management theory can be understood as a theory of decision making. Management wants to achieve results and not heaven on earth. His ideas on management were influenced by practitioners like Alfred Sloan of GM. This book gives interesting insights on how Drucker's ideas on management evolved in a discourse with other people and ideas.

Still fun in the 3d installment. Great narration of the audiobook!

Uh oh. Is Fox going back to his old ways? Is O'Hare going rogue? The latest is a personal revenge job for one of Fox's former colleagues. Nashville, Istanbul, France, Portugal, London... The globetrotting duo will go anywhere, and spare no expense to bring down the drug lord who has the misfortune of being in their crosshairs. Once again, they assemble the A-Team - an actor, Somali former-pirate, the bombshell who can drive any vehicle, a former Marine or two, and a tree house carpenter. They add a Hollywood CGI tech and a ship engineer to round out the crew.

I've read quite a bit of Evanovich in the past. To me, this doesn't seem like her usual slapstick. Goldberg, then, must have a very large role in the writing, which I appreciate. While the characters are still quite two dimensional, we're starting to get a bit more sense of what makes Fox and O'Hare tick. The main characters are slightly more mature (both in age and mentality) than the usual Evanovich characters. Still, the book is pretty much an action movie put to paper. Don't expect more than a fun read. I can only hope that the characters sort out their personal baggage and connection before the 25th book in the series. There's only so many times that we can read the same book (only locales and con targets changed) before the series will grow tiresome.

The audiobook is absolutely perfect. Every voice is spot on! I traveled to each locale, thanks to the narrator's accents.

Evanovich writes fun, bond-like character in foreign setting

Nick Fox has more than 9 lives. It's fun to have an international setting of the Nick Fox & FBI agent Kate fighting to catch bad guys "covertly". This job was the take-down of a drug lord who had changed this appearance with plastic surgery and was impossible to locate up to now. Leave it to Evanovich to use a love of fine chocolate to help identify him. In the Stephanie plum series there's always cake and donuts, in this sophisticated bond-like it's real gold-coated chocolates. Mix in a long sought after ship wreck and a con at sea. All of the prior characters used in the last Nick/Kate con are back. The usual sexual tension/relationship between Nick and Kate is growing. Kate is not lured by the finer things in life... She likes her Denny's grand slam breakfast, Coke and Toblerone! Love the many fascinating locales of this book!

Good Job!

Another great book by Janet Evanovich and her fun duo of Fox and O'Hare. The more I read about these two, the more I want to read. This team she has put together just fits perfectly and then you put Kate's dad in with them and it really adds extras to the stories. I liked this storyline but would love to see Nick and Kate a little more involved. If they like each other that much, make it a little more interesting between them. I love the cons they perform to get their "men" in the pursuit of justice. I would like to read more in with the side characters who help pull the cons too but in all I loved this book. Highly recommend it.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821 1881), one of nineteenth-century Russia s greatest novelists, spent four years in a convict prison in Siberia, after which he was obliged to enlist in the army. Good book, hard read

Dostoyevsky is a classical Russian author. His words are deep as well as dark.

At times this was a difficult read. Other times I followed easily.

He makes his mundane, almost impoverished life leap from the pages. Satirical and poignant language that really makes the reader think.

Well done.

a painful, beautiful tragedy

This book captures the ramblings of a disturbed mind in a disturbed world. The vanity and self loathing of the narrator express unspoken thoughts and feelings that we can all relate to on some level, mostly by introverted, reclusive individuals prone to over-thinking and self analysis through a negative filter.

Buy if you love Blair and/or manga

Okay. So, this probably isn't for you UNLESS you already have a healthy love/respect for manga (Japanese graphic novels). Or if you obsess over Blair (really, who wouldn't?!)

Beautifully drawn and a rather zany plot. The Gossip Girl Manga begins with the classic Gossip Girl story we all know and love: Blair is the Queen Bee until Serena returns to steal the spotlight (and Nate). But, anything after that...well, just prepare to be amused.

Dan is a creepy pervert who loves Blair (and Serena). Nate is still the clueless, gorgeous stoner. Chuck is the fun skeezy best friend who is always up for a scheme. Vanessa is surprisingly cool, and Jenny is a psychotic stalker.

After Serena lures Nate away from Blair by being...well...Serena, Blair sets out to break up Serena and Dan. Only, Dan falls in love with her, and hijinks ensue. Before she knows it, Blair gets herself into trouble when she tries to upstage Serena, and finds herself living with Vanessa and seeing how the other half lives.

Get ready for gorgeous clothes, zany plots, and lots of pinups of Blair being fabulous.

Some incomplete, confusing directions!!

Disappointing lack in some directions! I am an experienced knitter - have been knitting for over 60 years. Granddaughters' American Girl dolls provide an opportunity to be creative!
HOWEVER, the ENCHANTED KNITS FOR DOLLS HAS PROBLEMS. The Magical Dragon outfit, pg. 104 is confusing and VERY frustrating. Tail base, right side.... "purl to end" means a row of how many stitches??? There is also Tail Base - left side. I have knitted to this point... and now I will be on my own to create the outfit!
I have tried a sample with other yarn, and I will just do my thing since I CANNOT MAKE SENSE OF HER DIRECTIONS!
While the illustrations are gorgeous, I question whether anyone knitted from the printed directions BEFORE the book was published!!

brilliant ideas but not carefully edited

I love the ideas for the patterns but I bought a pack of Lion brand Bons bons, the specified yarn to knit the gnome girl outfit and there isn't even enough yarn of one color to knit the part of the front that calls for that color. And upon carefully ready I see that you switch colors for the back of the top, a strange thing which is not shown in the pictures. I will have to buy different yarn and try again if I want to make this and I find that very disappointing, I was knitting to gauge so the designers didn't pay attention to how much yarn the project takes.

An Unforgettable Spiritual Classic!

John Donne's poetic words pierce the heart and ignite the imagination. He speaks food for the soul, not just the heart. I have read and re-read his books for many years and cannot tell how deeply they have moved me and inspired me to be a better Christian. He was a profound writer, almost mystical and yet so very down to earth. A beautiful book that should not be missed by anyone interested in the life of faith.
