Good revision book.

I'm an anaesthesia trainee taking the final anzca. The "baby" T&C was a good companion to the "daddy" book. It provides a quick revision for the medical viva just the week before. The chapter at the end with a summary to physical examination of all systems is a real gem. Use it with the T&C YouTube videos on examination.

Great book as everything from Berklee music

Its been a long time since I put my eyes in a book so well organized. The exercises are great and make you fully understand the concepts. I recommend it for all of you that want to learn how to create good bass lines and to improvise.

This book changed everything!

This book has helped me become a better soloist almost overnight. It is a lot of fun to work through and the results are immediate and remarkable. This is the best jazz bass solo book I have seen yet.

Overly complicated approach to soloing?

I am self-taught in improvisation and consider myself fairly well-versed in learning independently. I'm also a teacher for a living in multiple disciplines.

I took an online course in improvisation, and have read several books on the subject. I can improvise over changes although I'm not an expert on how to do it over all chord changes out there. So, I bought this book to get a new perspective.

I found the following useful about the book-- it gives you an easy way of learning all the modes. The author shows you how to conceptualize scales as two, four-note cells called tetra chords. This approach was phenomenal.

However, I think the book has a number of weaknesses for the person who is trying to advance in their knowledge of improvisation through self-study. They have you identify pitch centers in a chord progression. Not key centers, but pitch centers, defined as notes that are common to all chords in a progression. This pitch center is your reference point for the starting note of the mode you are playing. So for the entire song, you are playing modes of a single pitch center.

It was easy to determine which modes you play over various parts of the song Tune Up and Blue Bossa. But for the later tunes, the author didn't explain how he got from the chord progression to the modes. Early in the book, he advocated taking all the chords in the pitch center, listing their chord tones, and then assembling all the chord tones in ascending order, creating a mode. I didn't find this worked for the later songs like Valse Hot and others.

Also, I found he often combined chords into one tonal (key) center in ways that I'm not used to seeing. For example, the progression Abmaj7 Cm7 F7 Bbm7 Eb7 Abmaj7, to me would suggest Ab major key center over the Ab major chord, a Bb Major tonal center over the Cm7 F7 (an incomplete II V I) and then back to Ab tonal center with the BbM7 Eb7 Abmaj7 (a II V 1 progression in Ab). Instead, he defined Abmaj7 and Cm7 as one tonal center, and F7, Bbmin7 Eb7 and Abmaj7 as another.

At this point, I found I couldn't get through the book any longer - apparently there is some foundational knowledge he is assuming or left out of this pedagogy (can you tell I'm a teacher for a living?). Perhaps both perspectives are right -- mine and his, but I found the lack of explanation of how he got from the progression to the modes confusing. I went back to my old way of doing it -- looking for II V's and playing their tonal center while respecting their tension notes over the various chords.

For anyone who tried the book sample in a Mac Kindle reader, don't be deterred from buying the Kindle version because of the experience. When I tried the sample it had no ToC, and the page to page navigation was inconsistent. The full Kindle version has a working ToC and page navigation.

The Instant Authority on Yahoo

Carlson nails it. Don't be fooled by the title. This book is only marginally about Marissa Mayer. It's the authoritative book ever written about Yahoo. Starting with the history of Yahoo, Carlson explains to the reader the origins of the famous internet brand that almost - but never made it to be the most dominant company the in world. The reader is treated to a thrilling backstory with perfect context. Regardless of your knowledge level about Yahoo, Carlson engages you the entire time. You perfectly understand the position of Yahoo through its start as a web directory in 1995 through its bumbles on acquiring Facebook or Google, and its lack of clarity about a core mission and purpose as more dominant businesses grew up around it. Only after establishing the Yahoo story - does Marissa become woven in - and Carlson gets it right. The story of her meteoric rise from top UX engineer at Google to the CEO of a famous internet brand is fascinating, whether or not you follow technology. There is a depth of understanding of Mayer, and her contrast in robotica and humanity that makes her fascinating.

This is a story, not a book. If you are looking for a page turner - the kind of story you will get through in a day - pick this up. The author tells the story in way that makes you feel smart and holds you in suspense. Adding this one to your mantle of conquered titles won't take long since you won't put it down.

Much like The Empire Strikes back, this is a cliff hanger, since the jury is still out on Yahoo's next phase.

Real page turner

This book, contrary to the title, is not all about Mayer and her fight to save Yahoo. It is instead a history of Yahoo, the many board room drama’s it has faced, the near misses and numerous hits. There is a number of chapters focusing on Mayer at Google and how she rose up through the ranks there.

The book is fast paced and well written, taking the reader through each episode of Yahoo’s beleaguered history. I read this book, 341 pages, in one night, failing to put it down as each chapter kept my interest and excitement at how things were panning out. I knew of Yahoo’s many failures (attempt to buy Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc) but what I didn’t know was the real story behind those. Fascinating.

What was fascinating for me to learn was just how many CEO’s Yahoo went through that never knew technology - one never even used email! This was ultimately the failure that lead Yahoo to be where it is today; two founders that never had the business ambition of Page/Brin. Got the sense they were never really that passionate about the business.

Yahoo created the very industry that made it irrelevant. Netscape, an early pioneer under Jim Clark/Marc Andreessen, had the decency to call it a day and realize it was no longer in the game. Yahoo suffers the same fate, however, management have checked out, but HR haven’t been told so the payroll continues.

The sheer size of the company was staggering to learn, the amount of projects (400+) it was supporting, all with their own infrastructure and languages. There was no standard. No unifying business strategy. An example was Yahoo Photos competed with Flickr (an acquisition Yahoo made) for many years.

The only reason that Yahoo is still in the game today, is due to a $1B investment it made in Alibaba (the chinese online marketplace company) a number of years ago. This has resulted in Yahoo’s stock to be in excess of $37B. This is a good problem to have, however Yahoo’s stock is trading high not because of what it is doing back at home, but how it’s investment in Alibaba is doing.

The book is unfinished. Mayer is only just getting started in Yahoo and while it is easy to quickly snap to judgement I believe there is more to come on the Yahoo story.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in business, the internet, and/or leadership profiles

This book has it all. It's a fascinating history of the internet and a company that practically started it all, only to be left behind by more innovative competitors. It's a behind the scenes look at gritty corporate infighting. And it's an intimate portrait of a clearly brilliant, but also deeply flawed CEO.

The author has woven all these pieces together into an exciting and highly readable narrative. I'm generally a very slow reader, but I was so captivated by this story that I read the entire thing in two days. There is enough "fly on the wall" detail to make you think you're there for some interesting and sometimes downright bizarre situations (Mayer riding a Zamboni while wearing pajamas at a Christmas party!), which makes you not want to put the book down.

Ultimately, what I loved most about the book, is the way it doesn't just set out to blame Mayer for failing to turn Yahoo around, nor does it unduly praise her and simply write off the situation as hopeless for even the best executive. Rather, the book is a highly nuanced portrait that allows the reader to make their own judgements about whether Mayer, despite her obvious flaws, is the right choice for the job.

This is the first play of a trilogy by Aeschylus (c. 525-456 B. C.), the other two being lost (Aeschylus wrote over seventy plays of which only seven are extant). It begins the story of the daughters of Danaus. The brothers Aegyptus and Danaus were descendents of Io. Aegyptus had fifty sons and Danaus had fifty daughters and the sons are determined to marry their cousins. The daughters flee to Argos, seeking sanctuary from Pelasgus, King of Argos. The play, which contains very little action, is really serving as a prologue to the other two missing members of the trilogy.

I have recently been made aware of several websites that focus on The Anarchist Cookbook. As the author of the original publication some 30 plus years ago, it is appropriate for me to comment.

The Anarchist Cookbook was written during 1968 and part of 1969 soon after I graduated from high school. At the time, I was 19 years old and the Vietnam War and the so-called "counter culture movement" were at their height. I was involved in the anti-war movement and attended numerous peace rallies and demonstrations. The book, in many respects, was a misguided product of my adolescent anger at the prospect of being drafted and sent to Vietnam to fight in a war that I did not believe in.

I conducted the research for the manuscript on my own, primarily at the New York City Public Library. Most of the contents were gleaned from Military and Special Forces Manuals. I was not member of any radical group of either a left or right wing persuasion.

I submitted the manuscript directly to a number of publishers without the help or advice of an agent. Ultimately, it was accepted by Lyle Stuart Inc. and was published verbatim - without editing - in early 1970. Contrary to what is the normal custom, the copyright for the book was taken out in the name of the publisher rather than the author. I did not appreciate the significance of this at the time and would only come to understand it some years later when I requested that the book be taken out of print.

The central idea to the book was that violence is an acceptable means to bring about political change. I no longer agree with this.

Apparently in recent years, The Anarchist Cookbook has seen a number of 'copy cat' type publications, some with remarkably similar titles (Anarchist Cookbook II, III etc). I am not familiar with these publications and cannot comment upon them. I can say that the original Anarchist Cookbook has not been revised or updated in any way by me since it was first published.

During the years that followed its publication, I went to university, married, became a father and a teacher of adolescents. These developments had a profound moral and spiritual effect on me. I found that I no longer agreed with what I had written earlier and I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the ideas that I had put my name to. In 1976 I became a confirmed Anglican Christian and shortly thereafter I wrote to Lyle Stuart Inc. explaining that I no longer held the views that were expressed in the book and requested that The Anarchist Cookbook be taken out of print. The response from the publisher was that the copyright was in his name and therefore such a decision was his to make - not the author's. In the early 1980's, the rights for the book were sold to another publisher. I have had no contact with that publisher (other than to request that the book be taken out of print) and I receive no royalties.

Unfortunately, the book continues to be in print and with the advent of the Internet several websites dealing with it have emerged. I want to state categorically that I am not in agreement with the contents of The Anarchist Cookbook and I would be very pleased (and relieved) to see its publication discontinued. I consider it to be a misguided and potentially dangerous publication which should be taken out of print.

WARNING! NOT the Original Anarchist Cookbook

When I opened the package, I was stunned to find this edition about 1/3 as thick as the original. Thinking that perhaps the publisher had used high quality extremely thin Tyvek "paper" or similar for waterproof purposes, I wasn't too concerned, but decided to Google "Anarchist Cookbook" to find that the original publisher had sold the book and the subsequent publisher had "sanitized" this current edition, in my opinion only, for the sake of continued saleability. I DID NOT take the book from the shrinkwrap, but immediately initiated a return. Do your research and you will see what caused me to return this item.

Not what I expected

I too am very disappointed with this version. While I have not personally seen the original publication, it seems to be missing content. For example, it was my understanding that there was a recipe for homemade napalm. There is no mention of napalm whatsoever in the book. The text seems to be missing simple how to, and I will be returning the book and will look elsewhere for it. Disappointed
