The result is the most comprehensive and up-to-date study of what heavy infantry combat was like in the age of Alexander the Great and his Successors.

About the Author
Christopher Matthew has just completed his doctoral thesis on hoplite warfare at MacQuarie University in Sydney, where one of his assessors has said he 'singlehandedly advanced the whole field'. He has also been invited to lecture on the subject at other Australian universities. This book, closely based on his doctoral thesis, will be his first, although he has already had several articles published in academic journals. 'He is currently working on a new translation of Aelian's work on tactics and co-editing (with Dr Matthew Trundle) Beyond the Gates of Fire: New Perspectives on the Battle of Thermopylae, both of which will be published by Pen & Sword.

If you are interested in the details of how the Hellenistic Pike-phalanx operated, this book is a rare prize. I ordered it directly from P&S and have been reading it over the last two months. After reading the book I now understand why early-modern pike drill and Hellenistic drill were significantly different. Highly recommended for those interested in Hellenistic tactics and drill

Augie Hand had 30 years of hands-on experience in repairing and troubleshooting motors, followed by 15 years of giving seminars on the subject for electric motor repair shop technicians and in-house training for large industry maintenance technicians. He owned an electric motor repair shop for a number of years, and he taught the electric motor repair course at Southwestern Technical Institute. Great source of info.

This book is a great addition to any tool box. We recently used it to identify 9 leads in a delta connected motor. With the method used here, we saved enough time (money) to cover the cost of the book!

The format with the questions and answers page numbers at the end of each chapter would make it quite useful in the class room, too.

Of course, the "safety tips" through out are useful to everyone.

As a previous owner of an Electric Motor Shop, I would recommend this book as a supplement for their 'Bible' for electric motor repairs. I would also recommend that anyone teaching this trade have this as a study guide for his students. It's tops for any problem solving of electric motors.

Excellent Mental Math book for preparing for technical interviews. It really hammers the 60-to-1 rule and how to apply it in multiple scenarios. There is a little overlap with the McElroy book, I'd recommend both as they are both a quick read.

Gr 3-6-The Lower East Side Tenement Museum opened in New York City in 1994. "Urban archeology," "diligent research," and "interviews with former residents" facilitated the re-creation of this building that housed immigrants from the mid-1800s to its closing in 1935. Essentially a photo-essay of material from the museum, the text is divided into 13 brief sections beginning with "Mystery: The Gumpertz Family." Readers learn that "Julius Gumpertz walked out of the building-on a crisp October morning in 1874" never to be heard from again. Working as a seamstress, his wife managed to support her four young children, one of whom "died of diarrhea, an all-too-common fate for nineteenth-century infants." Each black-and-white photograph is accompanied by a detailed caption. Other sections introduce three more families and also tell their stories through artifacts and oral histories. Additional segments such as "Early Immigration" and "Ellis Island: Portal of Hope" deal with more general aspects of immigration at that time. Chock-full of the simple details of everyday life as well as larger tales of human joy and suffering, this volume presents an intriguing window into urban tenements just before and after the turn of the century. Good Immigrant Culinary History

I visited the Lower East Side Tenement Museum several years ago. It was fascinating. The photographs and research conducted for this book made everything come alive.

As a fan of immigrants' stories and culinary history, I was a happy reader.

great pictures, personal stories

This is a great glimpse at early immigrant life in New York City. The pictures were amazing and the stories that went with them really gives the reader an idea of what it was like to live as a new arrival to America. I would have enjoyed it more if it were longer but the stories and pictures provided were great.

There is a growing need for new adhesives for technical and medical applications! The nature uses adhesion in a host of ways and we can learn a great deal from this. Adhesive systems of potential interest need to be thoroughly analyzed and the common underlying principles and unique features of natural adhesives have to be understood.

The first part of this book gives an overview of selected adhesive systems from the plant and animal kingdoms. It describes their structure (morphology), function (secretion), and what kinds of adhesives are produced (composition). Knowledge about biological adhesives raises the question as to how these systems can benefit our daily lives.

The second part of this book focuses on technical and medical applications of biological adhesives and biomimetic systems. The use of renewable biological components in industrial adhesives is also highlighted as is the use of biomimetic and bio-adhesives in basic and applied research. Medical and surgical applications of these adhesives such as wound healing and the bonding of tissues/organs are also covered.

This publication can be readily used in conjunction with the book “Biological Adhesives” by Smith and Callow (2006) which describes the basis of bonding systems and their chemical and mechanical properties and means that readers now have a comprehensive overview of biological adhesive systems and their applications!

About the Author

Dr. Dipl.-Biol. Janek von Byern:

While he was studying at the Johann W. Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main and during several research stays at the private marine research station IFMB in Giglio, Italy, cephalopods and their complexity (flexibility, color adaptation, and intelligence) aroused Janek von Byern’s interest. With his diploma thesis he focused on the pharmacology and histology of the blood circulation system in Sepia officinalis.

Inspired by�Uwe Piatkowski from the IFM-GEOMAR� institute he began to consider the�abstract thought that cephalopods could also�produce glue.�During further marine research stays he met Prof. Dr. J. Ott from the Department of Marine Biology of the University of Vienna and finally moved in 2003 to their Core Cell Imaging and Ultrastructure research facility.

In his PhD he characterized the adhesive system of the pygmy squid Idiosepius and started to analyze the glue components biochemically. Sampling led him to South Africa, Mozambique, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and Australia where he collected different species, which raised new knowledge of other glue-producing animals and their attachment behavior.

Dr. Dipl.-Biol. Ingo Grunwald:

is a research associate and project manager in the "Biomolecular Surfaces and Materials Design" work group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) in Bremen, Germany. The Fraunhofer IFAM is the largest independent research organization in Europe in the area of industrial adhesive bonding technology. Ingo Grunwald's work at the Fraunhofer IFAM focuses on biomimetic materials and biofunctionalized surfaces. He studied biology at University of Hanover (Germany), with biochemistry and molecular biology being his main areas of interest. His Ph.D. work concerned the purification, characterization, and molecular cloning of a new sugar-binding protein. Research time spent at Cancer Research UK and at the TECHNION in Israel broadened his interest in protein interactions, protein analysis, and proteomics. He studied the functionality of material surfaces with designed proteins in the field of nanobiotechnology as part of postdoctoral work at the University of Stuttgart (Germany). Ingo Grunwald has a lectureship in bioanalytical methods and surface biofunctionalization at the University of Bremen (Germany).
