Very nice book

This National Geographic book we bought in a local bookstore and it is amazing!! Despite the fact I am an adult I love reading children books with my kids. This one is so colorful my kids adore it!

I have also bought this book for my older boy (it has stunning images too and great really good info):

Nice!

I got this for my 10-year-old daughter who is interested in all animals. Living right in the middle of the country, we especially like to learn about sea creatures because our chances of actually seeing any are slim. This is a really great little book with some really neat pictures. Although I disagree with some of the politics National Geographic seems to sneak into their publications from time to time, this one was pretty neutral. My daughter has read it over and over and loves to show me the pictures and read to me interesting facts about all the fishies.

What's in the Blue stuff called Water?

I purchased this book for my son who is diagnosed with Autism and aspire to become an Ecologist in the area of Marine Biologist. This book has very large and bright pictures and colors. It is written for young people and only has a few pages. Although I son like the book, even with the text bubbles and large print, he wished that it were more information to review. I really liked the pictures and enjoyed the information included. He thought it was a nice refresher. They were like small posters for him as was the NG Kids Wild Animal Atlas. He wants me to try and find the adult versions of these books. I am still looking.

Very Disappointing

This book wasn't particularly helpful because it didn't cover topics that I thought would be included in this book. Instead, it seems to focus heavily on stuff like dealing with domestic violence and similar topics. Plus, the book assumes that you'd already be in a relationship and I was looking for advice on how to deal with potential boyfriends when they turn out to be jerks. I read maybe a couple of pages, and skimmed the rest without finding anything of value. Overall, I thought that the title was more eye-catching than the book's actual content. This was very disappointing overall and I tried my best to like it.

Great Book for the Basics, Not Much Else

If you know nothing of the subject, then this is an excellent book to start out with. The CD that comes with it even has helpful powerpoint presentations and quizzes to better help you retain the information. (My college "professor" was so lazy that he actually used the book's powerpoint presentations to teach the class... now there's a waste of tuition money).

If you know the basics of OSM (and you probably do, because many of the principles are based on common sense), then don't get this book. Go find an intermediate/advanced OSM book that doesn't have lava all over the cover.

This book is good, a lot smaller than the other versions. To scale it down, though, they cut back on explaining certain calculations. They think we remember this stuff from undergrad???

What kind of Dog?

A great way to learn what kind of dog when learning the name of the breed. I bought this for my husband who is always reading the dog ads in the paper and asking what kind of dog they are. Good learning tool. I bought it from the used book listing, and it is in perfect condition.

Very Useful in my grooming salon!

This is a book I purchased to keep in the waiting area of my pet salon. Kids waiting on their dogs to be groomed have loved flipping through and looking at all the different breeds, and it has been useful when mixed breeds come in to try and guess what kind of dogs they are, as well as show owners examples of breed cuts, although some of the pictures do not show the dogs in their breed cut. Overall, this has been great to have.

Just not great.

I was expecting this book to have more information about the breeds than it did. Most only had a single image of the dog, and others showed none at all. More photos would have been helpful particularly in the back section of "Rare Breeds". This book is okay. Just not great.

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway received his doctorate at Illinois Institute of Technology and is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College. He received the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, where he taught for 17 years. Dr. Serway began his teaching career at Clarkson University, where he conducted research and taught from 1967 to 1980. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977 and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex M�ller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. Dr. Serway also was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. In addition to PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Dr. Serway is the coauthor of PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; COLLEGE PHYSICS, Ninth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. In addition, Dr. Serway has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings. Dr. Serway and his wife Elizabeth enjoy traveling, playing golf, fishing, gardening, singing in the church choir, and especially spending quality time with their four children, nine grandchildren, and a recent great-grandson.

John W. Jewett, Jr., earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Drexel University and his doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in optical and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Dr. Jewett began his academic career at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he taught from 1974 to 1984. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Through his teaching career, Dr. Jewett has been active in promoting science education. In addition to receiving four National Science Foundation grants, he helped found and direct the Southern California Area Modern Physics Institute (SCAMPI) and Science IMPACT (Institute for Modern Pedagogy and Creative Teaching). Dr. Jewett's honors include the Stockton Merit Award at Richard Stockton College in 1980, selection as Outstanding Professor at California State Polytechnic University for 1991-1992, and the Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in 1998. In 2010, he received an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Drexel University in recognition of his contributions in physics education. He has given over 100 presentations both domestically and abroad, including multiple presentations at national meetings of the AAPT. Dr. Jewett is the author of THE WORLD OF PHYSICS: MYSTERIES, MAGIC, AND MYTH, which provides many connections between physics and everyday experiences. In addition to his work on PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, he is the coauthor for PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition, as well as GLOBAL ISSUES, a four-volume set of instruction manuals in integrated science for high school. Dr. Jewett enjoys playing keyboard with his all-physicist band, traveling, and collecting antique quack medical devices that can be used as demonstration apparatus in physics lectures. Most importantly, he relishes spending time with his wife Lisa and their children and grandchildren.

Great, but wrong edition for my needs

Now, I rated this purchase 3/5. I don't feel it deserves lower, but it certainly doesn't deserve higher.

First off. This book is well written, easy to follow, and easily navigated for quick access to selected problems. IF you are looking for the solutions to the 7th edition, it's great.

Secondly. This book's first problem, is that it only contains answers to a very select few problems. Generally they select problems that will help students understand a broad range of problems, so it's not a complete missing of the mark, but it's still unfortunate.

Finally. This is the big reason I did not like my purchase. I was looking for (and hoping) the 8th edition. My class uses the 8th edition, I bought the 8th edition of the book, for me, the 7th edition is worthless. Mentioning that the book is for the 7th edition rather than the 8th in the description would be helpful.

So, I will be returning the book, and would just like to advise that you are in fact looking for the 7th edition, not the 8th.

A life saver!

Don't even think about purchasing the textbook without the two solutions manuals! The problems at the end of the chapter mean nothing without the answers! This solutions manual is a good one too. It gives SOLUTIONS, not just answers like some of the other so-called solutions manuals. I highly recommend this for anyone taking physics class using the corresponding text. The solutions manual has saved me hour upon hours of deliberating if my answers were right, and if they weren't, it showed me how to do it correctly. The solutions are laid out step by step, no skipping anything. Most solutions fill up an entire page.

Geoffrey G. Parker is a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College (effective July 2016) and a visiting scholar at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. He has been a professor of management science at Tulane University since 1998.

' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses

Every so often I lead workshops on pricing strategy. For the past several years I have been telling people that if you are in a conventional business (what Parker, Van Alstyne and Choudary call a 'pipeline business') and you are competing against a platform business you have already lost. Pipeline businesses do not have winning strategies against multisided markets, or as this book calls them 'platform businesses.' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses. If you use (and if you are reading this you do use a Platform Business, Amazon), are working on or may compete against a Platform Business you need to read this book. I have been recommending it to my own team at TeamFit.co to my investees and to companies that come to me for pricing advice.

Platform Revolution has many strong points.It explains the feedback loops and network effects (positive and negative) that drive platform business dynamics, the chapter on monetization is excellent and the chapter on governance is a must read (I think I will send a copy to Vancouver's mayor). The book even has a short section on data ownership, which is likely to emerge as a major social issue over the next decade (ask yourself, why does the company I work for own my employee records, why don't I own them too!).

Platform Revolution is not perfect of course. My main complaint is the lack of useful diagrams. The book is sketch poor and I found that I had to keep a notebook and pencil beside me as I read to make sure I was following all of the interactions of forces and to give me some mnemonics to remember what I was reading. This is good in that it helped me to build up my own mental models, but I would prefer to have shared sketches that I could use in business planning with other people. I also found the characterization of the two sides of a market as 'producers' and 'consumers' limiting. This is not a useful model to describe many two-sided market interactions, as the authors themselves noticed when they talked about dating sites (dating sites are a good thing to study to learn a lot about very dynamic two-sided markets). I also found the discussion of Porter's Five Forces to be simplistic and dismissive. This seems to be an MIT thing as other people associated with MIT have the same blinkers. A more useful approach would be to look at how each aspect of the five forces gets drawn into platform markets.

There are some other good books to read on this theme. I would also recommend Platform Ecosystems by Amrit Tiwana, Matchmakers by David Evans and Modern Monopolies by Moazed and Johnson. But Platform Revolution is an excellent place to start.

Read this book to keep up

Disclaimers: I do not know the authors; I did buy the book from Amazon; I have no financial stake in the book; I am not a robot reviewer. My summary is that this book is essential reading for anyone who is part of any of the digital revolutions going on today. This includes those in business and those in information technology. You need to include the "platform mentality" in your business planning. I didn't give the book five stars for three reasons. One, a few references in the text seemed really out of date. Apparently no one caught those in the editing process. Second, in truth, the platform revolution started quite a while ago. Companies like CH Robinson have been successfully using it in the logistics business years before Facebook. Finally, all is not roses in platforms. Who is going to guarantee the quality of Uber cars and drivers, for example? Online reviews (like this one) are not 100% reliable and only a few bad apples can ruin the barrel. But it is an exciting time and an exciting book.

Timely broad survey of platforms, mechanisms, and issues

This a scholarly but very readable survey of platforms and their foundations, with broad scope and modest depth. As a technologist and entrepreneur I found this a very good way to quickly grasp the breadth of platforms and the transformations they cause. If you want a good Platforms 101, you won't be disappointed. This book orients you. If you want implementation details, you'll need to look elsewhere. There are many platform foundations to choose from.

This is a nice book for taking your Flask programming to the next level. It is meant for a programmer who is already working with Flask as it does not cover much introductory information.

I am working with Flask currently and there were a couple examples in the early chapters that helped me a lot. The explanations are generally pretty clear, but in some cases the author assumes the reader knows a lot.

One thing that annoyed me was the author mentioned this was the most comprehensive and best Flask book available. There's a couple other Flask books out there I have not checked out yet, but I'd prefer an author to acknowledge others in the field rather than assuming their book is hands down the best.

Some of the chapters felt a bit out of order to me. The goal of the book is to create a blogging platform with Flask but the 2nd chapter goes very deep into creating Models with SQLAlchemy. A lot of the chapters just felt in random order, and I would have liked to seen a more ground up approach to building the blogging platform.

Overall this is a good book for learning Flask. There is a lot of relevant information and you cannot go wrong buying this book if you want to improve your skills with Flask.

Taking the next step with Flask Web Development

Mastering Flask covers all the topics needed to a create web site using Flask Web Framework. However, knowledge of the in and outs of web development is required.

The reader will need to know how to join the topics presented in the book to build a functional application. The source code provided by the author should help.The reader should have some experience beforehand in building an application using the Flask web framework or some other framework. Also, the explanation of some of the topics are not covered in depths.

The books covers advance topics, like NoSQL using MongoDB and Celery. These advances topics are not required to build a Web Application, but are essential to build modern web application that requires high performance and scalability.

The Secure Your App, NoSQL and Celery topics makes the book a worth while investment.

There is more than enough information in this book to the get you started using the Flask Web Framework, but it should not be only your reference.

Review of Mastering Flask

This is a book for Python programmers that want to include Flask in their applications. It covers everything from start to finish. The start it shows how to obtain and install Flask and at the end it tells how to deploy the application on your own server, on Heroku and on Amazon web services. In between it tells about databases, explaining the difference between RDBMS and NoSQL databases and which should be used depending on the application. It talks about SQLAlchemy, which is used for connecting to the database. It also presents information on using Jinja to create the user views. It lists a few of the more popular Flask extensions and how to create your own.

All in all I would recommend this book.
