About the Author
Stephen Greenblatt (Ph.D. Yale) is Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. Also General Editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature, he is the author of eleven books, including The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (winner of the 2011 National Book Award and the 2012 Pulitzer Prize); Shakespeare's Freedom; Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare; Hamlet in Purgatory; Marvelous Possessions: The Wonder of the New World; Learning to Curse: Essays in Early Modern Culture; and Renaissance Self-Fashioning: From More to Shakespeare. He has edited seven collections of criticism, including Cultural Mobility: A Manifesto, and is a founding coeditor of the journal Representations. His honors include the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize, for both Shakespearean Negotiations: The Circulation of Social Energy in Renaissance England and The Swerve, the Sapegno Prize, the Distinguished Humanist Award from the Mellon Foundation, the Wilbur Cross Medal from the Yale University Graduate School, the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre, the Erasmus Institute Prize, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley. Barbara K. Lewalski (Ph.D. Chicago) is William R. Kenan Professor of English and of History and Literature at Harvard University. She is the recipient of the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize for Protestant Poetics and the Seventeenth-Century Religious Lyric and the Explicator Prize for Donne’s Anniversaries and the Poetry of Praise. Her other books include Paradise Lost and the Rhetoric of Literary Forms, Writing Women in Jacobean England, Milton: A Critical Biography, and The Polemics and Poems of Rachel Speght (editor). Lewalski is the recipient of Guggenheim and NEH Senior fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Honored Scholar of the Milton Society.

Lawrence Lipking (Ph.D. Cornell) is Professor of English and Chester D. Tripp Professor of Humanities at Northwestern University. He received the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Prize for The Life of the Poet. He is also the author of The Ordering of the Arts in Eighteenth-Century England; Abandoned Women and Poetic Tradition; and Samuel Johnson: The Life of an Author and editor of High Romantic Argument. Lipking is the recipient of Guggenheim, ACLS, Newberry Library, Wilson International Center for Scholars, and NEH Senior fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

George M. Logan�(Ph.D. Harvard) is a Senior Fellow of Massey College in the University of Toronto and the James Cappon Professor of English Emeritus at Queen’s University, Canada, where he was head of the English Department for nine years and an award-winning teacher. He is the author of The Meaning of More’s Utopia and principal editor of the Cambridge edition of Utopia (Latin and English), editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Utopia (3rd edition), More’s History of King Richard the Third, and The Cambridge Companion to Thomas More, and coeditor, with Gordon Teskey, of Unfolded Tales: Essays on Renaissance Romance; he has also written a history of the Indiana University School of Music.

Deidre Shauna Lynch is Chancellor Jackman Professor and Associate Professor of English at the University of Toronto. She is the author of The Economy of Character, which was awarded the MLA’s Prize for a First Book, and editor of Janeites: Austen’s Disciples and Devotees and, with William B. Warner, Cultural Institutions of the Novel. She is also an editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Humanities Center and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and of the Northeast Association of Graduate Schools’ Graduate Faculty Teaching Award.

Katharine Eisaman Maus (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins) is James Branch Cabell Professor of English at the University of Virginia. She is the author of Being and Having in Shakespeare; Inwardness and Theater in the English Renaissance; and Ben Jonson and the Roman Frame of Mind; editor of a volume of Renaissance tragedies; and coeditor of English Renaissance Drama: A Norton Anthology, The Norton Anthology of English Literature, and a collection of criticism on seventeenth-century English poetry. He is the recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the American Philosophical Society.

Jahan Ramazani�(Ph.D. Yale and M.Phil. Oxford) is Edgar F. Shannon Professor of English at the University of Virginia, previously the Mayo NEH Distinguished Teaching Professor. He is the author of Transnational Poetics, which won the Harry Levin Prize of the American Comparative Literature Association, and of Poetry of Mourning: The Modern Elegy from Hardy to Heaney, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is also the author of The Hybrid Muse: Postcolonial Poetry in English and Yeats and the Poetry of Death: Elegy, Self-Elegy, and the Sublime. Catherine Robson�(Ph.D. UC Berkeley) is Associate Professor of English at New York University and a faculty member of the Dickens Project. She is the author of Men in Wonderland: The Lost Girlhood of the Victorian Gentleman and Heart Beats: Everyday Life and the Memorized Poem (forthcoming), and has received fellowships from the NEH, the Guggenheim Foundation, the University of California, and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.

James Simpson (Ph.D. Cambridge) is Douglas P. and Katherine B. Loker Professor of English at Harvard University and former Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge. An Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, he is the author of Piers Plowman: An Introduction to the B-Text (1990); Sciences and the Self in Medieval Poetry (1995); Reform and Cultural Revolution, 1350–1547; Volume 2 of The Oxford English Literary History (2002); Burning to Read: English Fundamentalism and Its Reformation Opponents (2007); and Under the Hammer: Iconoclasm in the Anglo-American Tradition (2010).

Jon Stallworthy (M.A. and B.Litt. Oxford) is Senior Research Fellow at Wolfson College of Oxford University, where he is an Emeritus Professor of English Literature. He is also former John Wendell Anderson Professor at Cornell, where he taught after a career at Oxford University Press. His biography of Wilfred Owen won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the W. H. Smith Literary Award, and the E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His biography of Louis MacNeice won the Southern Arts Literary Prize. He is also the author of Rounding the Horn: Collected Poems and Singing School: The Making of a Poet, and editor of the definitive edition of Wilfred Owen’s poetry, The Complete Poems and Fragments; The Penguin Book of Love Poetry; The Oxford Book of War Poetry; and coeditor of The Norton Anthology of Poetry. Stallworthy has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Literature.

Jack Stillinger (Ph.D. Harvard) is Center for Advanced Study Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Illinois. He is the author of The Hoodwinking of Madeline and Other Essays on Keats’s Poems, The Texts of Keats’s Poems, the standard edition of The Poems of John Keats; Multiple Authorship and the Myth of Solitary Genius; Coleridge and Textual Instability; and Reading "The Eve of St. Agnes." M. H. Abrams (1912―2015) was Class of 1916 Professor of English, Emeritus at Cornell University. It's a keeper!

The 8th edition of the Norton Anthology of English Literature is edited by Greenblatt and contains "the major authors" only. This thorough overview of the genre ranges from 15 c. Anglo Saxon literature (including Seamus Heaney's translation of "Beowulf") to some contemporary British literature (including work by JM Coetzee and Salman Rushdie). The selections are good ones and do not seem to suffer from a single editorial point of view or tone (unlike the Penguin survey edition of modern literature that is, frankly, a complete downer). This Norton edition includes classics such as John Donne's "Meditation 17", Swift's "A Modest Proposal", Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", an excerpt from Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication on the Rights of Women", "Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" and so on (it might be a bit thin on the ladies but what is included is the good stuff). As an English teacher and probable reference freak, I am pleased with it.

Incredible Amount of Excellent Literature All in One Book!

While there have been changes made to the Norton Anthology of English Literature, Volume 1 (or A), there's no mistaking that in its genre, this is a masterpiece. It's easy to quibble with which selections make it in and which versions are used, etc. But this is an incredibly rich resource of early English literature.

This is one of the books that helped foster my love of literature, and that of many others. It is a portal to any number of authors you wish to read in more detail. It's hard not to love a book that gives you introductions to the following authors and works - and many, many more!

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Chaucer's Canterbury Tales
Julian of Norwich

Everything in the palm of your hand. Or, hands...

This edition of the Norton Anthology should be required for any literate person to own and at least leaf through, if not completely consume. It's a terrific collection of the bests of English literature, with very insightful footnotes on each piece. A good purchase, and was a good choice for my professor, who assigned it as the text for an Eng. Lit course. The only problem was the size - this tome is a monster! Definitely not something to carry to the beach, or even on a plane.

Challenging but worth it

To study for my boards I used this book and the official ASCP review book. In my opinion the ASCP review book was a waste of money. The questions in that book are a lot easier and very few of the questions have decent explanations of the answers. I learned so much more from Harr's review book because on the opposite side of the page for every question is an explanation of not only why the answer is what it is but also why the other choices were not correct. The ASCP review book for most of the questions does not provide a reason behind the answer but a reference to another book for more information or just repeats the question into the explanation.

I also liked Harr's review book better because of the CD that came with it. It has more picture based questions and a way for you to customize your quizzes so you can choose how many questions you want, which disciplines of CLS you want questions to be taken from, and the difficulty level of the questions. After you finish the quiz it will give you a percentage break down of how well you did in each area so you know where you need to focus your studying too. The CD does not give you explanations of the answers however, just what the correct answers are.

The only negative I can say for Harr's review book is that because the questions are much harder I only got about 75% of the questions in most sections and for some areas I couldn't even break 70%. So you have to keep in the mind set that you are not supposed to know the answers to all of these questions (but good for you if you do!). Even with those percentages I easily passed the boards and it was because of this book. I never looked over my books or notes from my classes and after going through the ASCP review book once, never picked it up again because the questions were not helpful to me without a decent explanation behind the answer.

Highly recommend this book and do not worry at all about not buying the ASCP review book. You will sail through the boards if you use this book taking care to read the explanation of the answers even when you get the question right because there is information in there that goes beyond the question. The best thing I learned from this book was how to work through a question so when I didn't know the answer to a question on the boards exam I could work through why each possible answer was wrong to determine which answer must be right. And this book really helps train you how to be able to do this if used properly.

This is a must-have review book for ASCP

I studied with this book for about 2 weeks and I'm convinced it made all the difference in the world. It's the best way to study, with questions and answers + in depth explanations right on the same page. The CD was very helpful because you can male your own tests by selecting the number of questions, specific areas to be tested over and level of question (so if you really want to test yourself you can choose only level 3). the only problem with the CD is that there are no explanations but it's a good way to test yourself and see your week areas and where to go back to your notes to study up on. But I truly think the book itself is a great review guide since it hits on pretty much everything you could be tested over.

I went into the test and passed on the first try. Everyone said it would be so hard I would pass but I'd be having a nervous break down, but after studying with this book, it felt like a piece of cake. I was done with the test in under an hour and they give you 2.5 hours.

have to admit that this book is one the best compared to all the other review books I have come across. When I was preparing to take the ASCP test I mostly studied from this book and, after I went through almost all the sections at least twice, I felt I was ready. The test wasn't easy, but if you go through the explanations offered for both right and wrong answers you have a very good chance of passing. I was able to pass the test with a very high score due in part to the in-depth explanations the authors provided. Remember, you must be willing to put the effort in to go through the feedbacks even when you answer a question correctly.

An Old Favorite of Mine

I purchased this book and The King Who Rained together. I first bought them when my children were very young and they came out. I keep a library of good children's books on hand for all my grandchildren to read and to borrow, since I do not use a television, and my grandchildren do not have television either. Thus, the literature I have on hand for when they visit is very important. A Chocolate Moose for Dinner has been a favorite of my children and grandchildren throughout the years. It is beautifully illustrated, extraordinarily clever, and teaches children the meaning of the word "colloquialisms". This book is a replacement for my old, chewed up, dog-eared ones. With 21 grandchildren, it gets quite a workout. What a fantastic book and great legacy for Fred Gwynne to have left behind. I can't recommend this book enough. It may have been written for children, but it's a real enjoyment for adults too! You'll love it.

You Need To Read and Re-Read This Book.

I remember liking this book when I was a kid so I purchased it to read to my children. It's a good book - a bit dated - but it opens up the doors of conversation to talk about communism, the Iran Contra Affair and all those great things from the 70's and 80's. Seller was great and would choose them anytime.

Bonus - This book was written by Herman Munster!!! That is the best.

Dr. C.T. Onions first joined the staff of the Oxford English Dictionary in 1895. He worked on the OED, the Shorter OED, and then published his Shakespeare Glossary in 1911. A wonderful and learned scholar, he died in 1966 as the first edition of The Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology was going to press. Assisted by G.W.S. Friedrichsen and R.W. Burchfield, Onions created a magnificent work of erudition, with 24,000 main entries. Including their derivatives, the dictionary delves into the origins of more than 38,000 words.

For each entry, the dictionary provides the correct pronunciation, followed by a short definition, and the century and source of the word's first recording. Then come the etymological notes. Thus one learns that "froth" (an aggregation of small bubbles on liquid) was first noted in the 14th century, in Sir Gawain and the Bible, that it comes from the Old Norse frooa, and was taken from there into German (fraup) and Old English (froth). Now in its fifth printing and a standard reference for scholars, Onions's opus is still the most comprehensive etymological dictionary of English ever to be published. --Stephanie Gold

Though the Oxford Etymology is an excellent work, it doesn't read well as a dictionary - being essentially a selection of edited etymological notes from the Original OED. The scholarship is dry, and cryptic... To appreciate this contrast, take a look at the Barnhart Etymology Dictionary, recently re-released as the Chamber's Dictionary of Etymology - with at least three times the material in terms of etymological research and definitions at less than half the price! What's especially useful for American readers is that the Barnhart / Chambers is drawn almost entirely from American sources and scholarship. IF you're only going to buy one etymology dictionary, get the Chambers - but if you're hooked, then the Oxford is an excellent adjunct to the more exhaustive Chambers/Barnhart, balancing the American scholarship with a decidedly UK English orientation.

Keep it in the kitchen

We have had a copy of the Oxford Etymological Dictionary in our kitchen for past several years because over the dinner table, inevitably, one of our children asks, "where does that word come from?" We were tired of running in and out of the living room to find out. Now it has become a game -- who can come up with a probable root before whoever is looking it up finds the real answer. No, we don't home school. Our children are still young -- 12 and 9. I have occasionally caught my 12 year old just wallowing in this book, and she is normal in every other way.

Don't compromise because something seems a little difficult to access! The more you use it, the more comfortable you'll be with it. This, along with S.I. Hayakawa's Choose the Right Word, are two veritable smorgasbords for word lovers. A good atlas is a good thing to have on hand as well.

The defintions are extremely concise and the etymology section for each word is often also brief. Longer entries occur when a story or individual or specific event is behind the word. Nice and readable printing and a nice, small, thick size. As far as I can tell, this book has not been updated since publication in the sixties; okay by me because words coined since then can be researched using the net.

About the Author
James Reason was Professor of Psychology at the University of Manchester from 1977-2001, from where he graduated in 1962. He obtained his PhD in 1967. From 1964-76, he was Lecturer then Reader in Psychology at the University of Leicester. He has also worked at the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, Farnborough, and the US Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, Pensacola. His primary research interest has been the human and organizational contributions to the breakdown of complex, well-defended systems. He has written books on absent-mindedness, human error, aviation human factors, on managing the risks of organizational accidents and, most recently, on error management in maintenance operations. He has researched and consulted in the fields of aviation, railways, nuclear power generation, maritime safety, oil exploration and production, mining, chemical process industry, road safety, banking and health care. He received the Distinguished Foreign Colleague Award from the US Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (1995), the Flight Safety Foundation/Airbus Industrie Award for achievements in human factors and flight safety (2001), and the Roger Green Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society for contributions to human factors as applied to aerospace (2001), and the Flight Safety Foundation/Boeing Aviation Safety Lifetime Achievement Award (2002) He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Aeronautical Society and the British Psychological Society. He received an honorary DSc from the University of Aberdeen in 2002, and was awarded a CBE in 2003 for contributions to patient safety. In 2006, he was made an honorary fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Reason's modesty is an essential contribution to the risk management debate

James Reason's importance in shaping the current view on safety and accidents cannot be overstated. I could not agree more with this claim on the back cover of his latest book. The accident causation model that has brought Mr. Reason global fame, the Swiss cheese model, is at the foundation of most of the risk analysis models in use today.

The Human Contribution adds further to James' work but it also summarises a lot of his previous work. On the theoretical side, James describes some new risk models and comments on recent developments in risk models developed by others. Some of his comments are particularly interesting, I will provide you some extra highlights further below.

At the core of his new book are the stories of major accidents, in particular those where `heroic actions' prevented much worse from occurring. The Boeing from Air Canada that had to make an emergency landing on an air strip so small that the pilot had no choice but to gamble flying as if it was a glider plane (no one ever dared trying that). Captain Rostron who rescued the survivors of Titanic with an old ship that could have easily suffered the same fate as Titanic. There are many great stories of heroic behavior that are told by James in a very clear and factual manner.

The reason James puts such an emphasis on these stories becomes clear in his chapter on individual and collective mindfullness. The tension between the concept of `human as hazard' and `human as hero' is what Professor Reason has on his mind. His work on accident causation, which has led to the incredibly popular Tripod Beta incident analysis method, has contributed to organisations treating their employees mainly as hazards. He observes there is a trend towards less and less trust in human beings and a systems thinking that also reduces the chance that people will contribute positively to safety. James concludes that `heroic behavior' under extreme circumstances doesn't just happen, an organisation will need to do a lot to create the right basis. An organisation with mainly a `human as hazard' mental model will most likely do the opposite. This is a key point in his book.

I agree with Professor Reason that the `human as hazard' thinking has completely gotten out of hand. Quite a few organisations, both in government and in the Global Fortune 500, are creating such an extreme `one way of work culture' (stop thinking and do exactly as prescribed) that it has led to LESS safety and a dehumanizing treatment of their employees.

Another key point of The Human Contribution is its conclusion:

"As I come to write the final conclusions of this book, I am conscious of how ragged and inconclusive it is. I have provided you little in the way of formulae or prescriptions for safer operations. But, at least, I hope you would be suspicious of anything I (or any consultant) might have offered in this regard."

Now before I end with a list of the highlights of his book, I want to stress that James is underselling himself here. Professor Reason knows so much that he truly understands how little he really knows. His conclusion is a clear warning: beware of risk management consultants promising simple solutions and providing overconfident answers. In the real world, risk management is complex and seemingly muddy. Ambient Multi-Causality, all the factors in the world that can potentially contribute to an accident but have never seem to be a problem, keep combining in new ways and catching even the best risk managers off guard. Simple formulae for risk management can never be catch-all solutions. However, they can certainly assist in accident causation.

James concludes that the only thing you can do is to keep thinking and "do the best you can.". If the first and foremost risk thinker in the world is this modest about what he knows about risk, I hope it will help you to put in perspective the (bold) claims of the risk management consultants you may be talking to. They may know too little to know they know so little.

Some additional highlights:

- James has put in an extensive history and review of his own Swiss Cheese Model. Excellent, some stuff I never read elsewhere.

- Chapter 2 - A Mind's User Guide - very interesting. I never knew that people are so good at frequency gambling encounters of pretty much any kind. People often don't know they know it, but their `unconscious' will tell you if you ask the question right.

- Excellent overview of Human Error in general.

- Error Traps - excellent explanation of this concept and its importance. Sometimes risk management problems are simple, don't turn every incident into a leadership issue please!

- In chapter 7 James directly questions what he sees as reasoning errors in accident investigations. More troublingly, this extends to the current official Tripod Beta incident analysis method as used by companies like Shell. Mistaking latent conditions for underlying causes is what James calls a `counterfactual fallacy', and he gives a clear example of such a fallacy in the official accident investigation report into the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. I don't agree with James on this point (I think it is all about causal power), but he has really got me thinking. Are we mistaking conditions for causes? And if so, when does it help and when does it hurt? (Fortunately, there are Tripodians who are using Investigator 3 with the term `latent condition' to avoid such counterfactual fallacies, so some Tripodians listen to Professor Reason).

- In addition, James clearly points out that what is identified by many as a latent condition or failure is really a Universal. Calling a reasonable balance between productivity and safety a latent failure is something James Reason would not agree with. The tightrope one has to walk between safety and productivity is universal, and `blaming' an organisation for the `latent failure' of the balance it has chosen is unReasonable (sorry, had to put that obligatory pun in somewhere). All kidding aside, James' strictness with respect to concepts and their definitions is very helpful in the discussion. This is a strength of his book, even though it is not perfect in this regard.

And a few points of critique:

- I have been informed that the metaphor of the Swiss Cheese model was proposed by the brilliant aviation safety expert Dr. Robert Bruce Lee. James has probably forgotten this himself. As James acknowledges the importance of the metaphor itself (I would say the model would never have become this popular without it), I hope that Dr. Robert Bruce Lee receives the proper recognition for his contribution.

- James confesses that he does not understand the stochastic resonance model developed by Erik Hollnagel, FRAM or the Functional Resonance Accident Model. That is incredible given the fact the if anyone should be able to understand it, it should be James Reason. Could even Professor Reason be suffering from Ambient Multi-Causality Coping Disorder (AMCCD)? I dare not even consider the possibility, as that could mean it may affect almost all of us. Erik Hollnagel's Functional Resonance Accident Model contains nothing less than the promise to provide us the tools to predict major accidents and a future credit crises. I have a hunch that Professor Reason really wants to say he thinks FRAM is nonsense, but people raised in the UK tend to phrase that as "I don't entirely understand it, but that fault is mine.". I appreciate that.

- I fear that some readers will expect to learn more about the process of accident investigation. Unfortunately this book is all about the `what we found' and almost nothing about the `how we investigated it'. So you will have to get an extra book for that. I highly recommend the TOP-SET Practical Handbook of Investigation by the renowned accident investigator David Ramsay.

- Some new safety models that James introduces in Chapter 14 in my opinion add little value to his Swiss Cheese Model. They're actually less clear and less useful than the cheese model. I would recommend to James to expand the Swiss Cheese Model and to expand the use of the cheese metaphor.

In my review I have tried to cover a broad range of topics in The Human Contribution. I hope that at least some of it has been helpful for you. One final tip: if you have not read any of Professor Reason's book, I recommend reading his book Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents before you read this book. I realize I am undoubtedly suffering from some hindsight bias (meaning: I carry with me the knowledge and ideas from his previous work, cannot take the perspective of someone who hasn't read any of his books) and I have a hunch it will help greatly in understanding The Human Contribution and where James is coming from a decade after his last book.

Even if the only thing you take away from The Human Contribution is modesty and a healthy dose of doubt in how you approach safety and risk management, Professor Reason has delivered great work with his new book!

In short, I recommend The Human Contribution.

A must for any Safety professional

James Reason's books, Human Error, Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents and now The Human Contribution should be a mandatory reading for anyone concerned with safety performance. This book is easy to read and takes us from the Human as hazard to the Human as hero and gives valuable insights. Also the Knotted Rubber band model is an important contribution to understand that safety performance is constantly drifting to either side of the desired safety level and emphasises the importance of staying on top of what is going on. For as Reason says in his final comments in the book "Safety is guerilla war".

Well worth the money

It's hard to add to the very comprehensive review by S. D. E. Diekstra. So here are just a few personal observations:
* The first part of the book is devoted to a series of lists and definitions. Worthy and academically rigorous but, well, dull.
* There is some interesting theory, particularly around the author's "swiss cheese" model.
* The examples or "case studies" take up a fair part of the book and begin to look suspiciously like padding. They could easily be drawn from Wikipedia or similar sources. Much more detail than necessary.
* The summarising chapters, which introduce some additional theory, are worthwhile.

Overall I would have liked to have seen more theory and less detail in the description of accidents, but the book is well worth the money.

Basic Kanji Book: Effectively learn Kanji

Basic Kanji Book was compiled by four Japanese editors (Chieko Kano, Yuri Shimizu, Hiroko Takenaka, and Eriko Ishii) for the purpose of teaching the first 500 most basic kanji. These 500 kanji are divided up into 22 separate lessons. Each lesson is thematically and grammatically organized for higher connection rate in the learning process. Lessons include Kanji for time, Kanji at the Zoo, Kanji for Adjectives, Kanji for Verbs, and many more. The text is written to the goal of preparing the student for higher levels of Kanji learning by laying out the foundations that lead to the understanding of its inner workings. Though the text is complete in itself for accomplishing many basic day-to-day tasks in written Japanese.
The teaching methodology includes stroke by stroke lessons, examples of each character in compound forms, both "on" and "kun" readings, practice blanks within the book to follow, transliteration of sentences from English to Japanese, various writing exercises, periodic reviews, practical examples of daily use for the characters within any given lesson, fun games to encourage learning, and helpful illustrations for learning mnemonics. Varied methodologies promote fuller language acquisition.
This book is written for the student that has a firm understanding of both Hiragana and Katakana though no prior knowledge of Kanji is necessary. The layout of this book promotes effective self-study though this book could also be effectively used as the primary classroom text for teaching Kanji.
In conclusion, few if any other Kanji learning books do as superb a job as this one in making an otherwise difficult task both easy and fun. Quite possibly this is the best Kanji book for high learning retention and practical use on the market.

Part 2 of a great series!

This is part 2 of the Basic Kanji Book, and contains 249 characters, bringing the total for the two books up to 500. This volume is even better than the first because the Kanji are more advanced, and there is a minimal amount of English. All of the instructions are written in Japanese, and the only English you see is when they are translating new words.
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of having to know how to read a lot of Japanese in order to be able to understand this book, make sure you get volume 1 and work through that. Otherwise you might have a hard time getting the most out of this book.
This is the best book you can get for learning how to read, write, and understand Kanji. It also teaches you how to read train schedules, how to use a Kanji to Japanese dictionary, and how to fill in a form.
Once you are done with this book, you'll find yourself understanding a lot more about Japanese and Kanji.
