A Journal Filled with Hope
By Catherine
I picked this journal because of the quotes printed on colorful pages. Here are a few included.

"I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." Bill Cosby

"I always think that cynics are really romantics who have been crushed sometime in their lives and have put up this cynical mask to protect themselves." Jeff Bridges

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." Oscar Wilde

The journal was larger and sturdier than I expected and I think it's well worth the price. I'm going to hold onto my hope with the help of this journal!

Parents should be aware that mild curse words appear in the quotes (doesn't offend me, but thought I'd mention it!).

Each day, you are given a quote as a prompt and then a nice, big piece of paper to rant on - Perfect.

Large journal, large lines, great quotes to keep you positive. I love it. Definitely one of the better journals I've purchased and probably the most helpful for dealing with anxiety (I also have a one-line-a-day journal and several smashbooks).

Excellent survey of what you can do with Arduino
By Mark Colan
This book presents the broad landscape of what's possible with Arduino. It is one of the few Arduino books available that have been updated for Arduino 1.0. Content is organized as "recipes", and you can combine them to do all kinds of things. Knowing what is possible should help to stimulate your imagination. The book does not go deep into any one subject, choosing instead to give you enough to get started, and pointers on where to go for deeper information.

AUDIENCE

Two kinds of skills are required (or developed) to build projects that use Arduino. One is working with electronics - gathering components, assembling them, and connecting them to the Arduino. The other is simple programming in C. If you have these skills but no experience with Arduino and want a quick start, this book will really help.

Someone with little or no experience in these areas may be able to figure it out from Chapter 1 in particular, and reading the rest carefully. Absolute beginners may find it easier to start with an absolute beginners book. If you buy this book and find it is too deep, keep it, you can always get a simpler book, then come back when you're ready.

The book is not a complete introduction to programming or electronics. The author chose to go broad to introduce his audience to a wide range of possibilities, rather than go very deep on any of them, but there is enough info to make it work, and references to go deeper.

CHANGES FROM ARDUINO COOKBOOK FIRST EDITION

The second edition has been updated to the Arduino 1.0 release. It is expanded to 724 pages, 62 more pages, and a few dollars less. Comparing the books side-by-side, the table of contents were nearly identical. The page numbers are different, owing to expanded text in the second edition, and a few new sections:

Sending Messages Using Low-Cost Tranceivers
Communicating with Bluetooth Devices
Updating Third-Party Libraries for Arduino 1.0
Uploading Sketches Using a Programmer
Replacing the Arduino Bootloader
Reprogram the Uno to Emulate a Native USB Device

...and an Appendix: Migrating to Arduino 1.0, which describes the changes you need to make to older code to work with Arduino 1.0.

If you have the first edition, you may not need to get the second edition. You can download the new source code from the publisher's Web site; you can google "Arduino Software Release Notes" for a list of changes, some of which will require minor changes to your code. The author says that a few newer hardware devices have replaced the ones described in the first edition, but less than one year passed between these two editions, so it would not be a lot. The change to Arduino 1.0 should not require changes to circuits.

STRUCTURE

The book has 18 chapters containing a total of 204 topics or "Recipes" structured as a Problem, a Solution, Discussion, and See Also sections. Most problems are things people would really want to do: pieces of a project. Solutions consist of C code and libraries, and electronic components. Discussion might be troubleshooting, variations, or more information. See Also provides references for more information - in the book, and URLs for Web-based information or libraries.

The average "recipe" is 3.1 pages long; some are longer than others.

CONTENT

Chapter 1 discusses the software development environment (which is supported for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but comes from Arduino) and very basic information about the board. In introduces simple programming and wiring by way of the common "blinking light" example. In 21 pages, the goal is to get something running quickly more than learning how it all works.

Two chapters explain a bit about C: types of variables and manipulations; mathematical operations for numeric types.

Programs must have input and/or output to be useful. Since this is what makes your solution come alive, this is the bulk of the book, and the most interesting part.

Chapter 4 introduces serial communications - exchanging information with a computer which is connected to the Arduino via USB. This can be used for I/O to a connected computer, as well as debugging your program by sending status messages at various points in the processing.

Chapter 5 discusses digital and analog input and output at a very basic level - controlling output to pins, and reading input from the pins. This is the foundation for all I/O that follows.

A strength of Arduino is the vast array of devices that work without a lot of extra circuitry. Chapter 6 discusses detecting light (or dark), movement, acceleration, vibration, distance, sound, temperature, location, direction, and interface to a computer mouse or a game controller. Chapter 7 discusses visual output using LEDs alone or in a matrix, 7-segment displays, and meters.

Chapter 8 discusses producing movement, vibration, or controlling external devices with relays and solenoids. Chapter 9 shows you how to make sounds - as tones, melodies, playing recordings, controlling a MIDI synthesizer, and making a simple audio synthesizer.

Chapter 10 presents uses of InfraRed devices (your home stereo, your camera, etc) as well as detecting and acting upon InfraRed signals from remotes you already have. Chapter 11 tells you how to use LCD displays available for Arduino to display text, or how to display text on the TV.

Chapter 12 deals with dates and times - make Arduino aware of passing time, or to work as an alarm clock.

Chapter 13 presents I2C and SPI, standards used for exchanging information between a variety of digital devices. Learn to use a standard and you'll find it can be used with other devices. For example, if you want to use a Wii Nunchuck controller to control your Arduino applications, you will need to learn about I2C. You can also use I2C to talk to external memory added to Arduino, get temperature for an external digital temperature measuring device, or display 4 numbers on 7-segment displays using only two wires.

Chapter 14 is about wireless communication. Chapter 15 discusses using an Ethernet shield to Internet-enable your Arduino application.

Chapter 16 discusses the creation and use of code libraries. Chapter 17 dives deeper into the subject of prgramming, especially in handling memory. Chapter 18 is all about using the controller chip hardware in ways not (yet) supported by libraries.

Nine appendices give basic information on building with electronics, troubleshooting, digital and analog I/O pins, and character sets. For those who have code written prior to the release of Arduino 1.0, an appendix is there to help you migrate.

The source code can be downloaded from the publisher's Web site; the URL is on page xv.

ELECTRONIC VERSION

You should seriously consider the PDF version of the book, because all of the many links are live, and the PDF is on your computer as handy reference. You can always print pages as needed for reference while building. O'Reilly currently has a good deal for upgrading to a new PDF edition.

SUMMARY

The book serves as an introduction to the broadest range of Arduino capabilities of any book I have seen. With a little experience, the book will get you going quickly by demonstrating a working example that may be enough for your purposes. For me, this book is indispensable for Arduino work.

Only for beginners
By Gary Strawn
This is the first time I have ever considered returning a book to Amazon. I purchased this book based on the great reviews and a brief glance through the online preview pages. However, once I received the book I realized that it is not at all what I am looking for.

If you are new to programming, this book may be great. If you already know how to program but want to learn about the Arduino, this is NOT the book for you.

For example, chapters 1-3 discuss basic such as for loops (section 2.14) and the sqrt() function (section 3.8). This book works hard to avoid "advanced" subjects such as pointers and printf. Even in "Chapter 17: Advanced Coding and Memory Handling", there is barely any mention of heap and stack (SRAM) versus static (flash) memory. Sure, Ch.17 mentions the keyword PROGMEM but for any further details, the reader is referred to [...]. I don't need a general discussion of memory management, I bought this book hoping for information on the specific features and quirks of Arduino.

Want to learn about Arduino sleep modes? "18.10: Reducing Battery Drain" might seem like a good recipe. Don't bother though, all it does is reprint the most basic example of using the freely available Narcoleptic library from code.google.com. There is no mention of various Arduino sleep levels, how they may affect your code and what they do to the internal timers.

Let's pick a more basic example, how about a real-time clock? There is absolutely no discussion of the hardware side of a real-time clock. On the software side, there are a couple simple examples on using the standard C time library. It's a bit misleading to see "#include " in recipe 12.4 (note the brackets). Yes, is a standard C library. No, it is not a standard part of the Arduino C library. So the book's example code won't even compile and there is no explanation as to why. The only mention of Time.h being a separate download is a vague mention in the "See Also" section which refers to the [...] website. An experienced programmer should be able to figure this out but anybody that needs three chapters on basic programming may need a bit more of an explanation.

In my opinion, that is where this book repeatedly fails. It acts like each recipe is a self contained problem/solution set. In reality, the majority of print is wasted on repeating the basics in every recipe and all the good information is left to the "See Also" references. What use is this book if I have to look everything up myself anyways?

If you are new to programming and need help with concepts like pointers or i++ instead of i = i + 1; then find a real C programming tutorial (K&R is my recommendation). If you are looking for specific information on how the Arduino actually works, save yourself a few bucks and visit [...] because that's all that this book will tell you to do anyways.

Very Well Done.
By charniw
This is truly a beginners book. It is very well done. The book does not attempt to teach programming or electronics, but gives enough information to actually accomplish the small projects presented. I do have a background in electronics and programming but I followed the steps in the beginning of the book, including downloading and installing the software. Within 15 to 30 minutes we were downloading software to the Arduino and had it working. I also got my 13 year old daughter to make some simple "C" programming changes and download them to the Arduino. This, with no prior background in programming.

The book contains many chapters on interfacing various sensors and devices with Arduino. I scanned them all and each one just gave me more and more ideas on things I wanted to tinker with.

I don't like the icons used in the book for Tips/Warnings - why invent something new. I think the standard yellow caution would be better.

This is a great book and Arduino is an outstanding product for beginners to continue an interest or develop a new interest in electronics/programming.

    From the Inside Flap
Here are dozens of gripping, never-before-told stories of battle in World War II?from the point of view of the enemy.

This is an authentic account?often in their own words?of German infantry aces, common foot soldiers who were thrust into a blazing maelstrom of bloody horror such as the world had never seen. They faced the savage onslaught of fire-belching tanks at Kursk and carried wounded comrades hundreds of yards to safety through a hail of bullets. They fought alone behind enemy lines, tackled a foe vastly superior in numbers, and served as machine gunners in a thousand dangerous actions. On the frozen Russian steppes, under the scorching African desert sun, in the final desperate battles, they were outnumbered and outgunned, and faced impossible odds. Here are the fascinating stories of the men who stared death in the face during some of the most brutal battles ever waged.

    Rudi Brasche

    "Mount up!"

Unteroffizier Laupert, leader of the regimental pioneer platoon's 1st Squad, came rushing out of the makeshift battalion command post and ran toward the truck around which his squad had gathered. Feldwebel Wegener, the platoon leader, followed him on foot. Behind him came the other two squad leaders. "What's up, Herr Unteroffizier?" called Kneisel, commander of the first machine gun team.

"We're leaving at once. The bridge at Homyly must be taken before it is blown by the enemy."

The four Opel Blitz trucks, which were parked in a wood at the side of the road, drove off moments later. They left the main road and rolled along a field road. Rudi Brasche hung on tightly as the truck pitched and rolled. The first houses appeared before the trucks. That had to be Homyly. Soon the first shots were fired in their direction from the entrance to the village.

"Ready the machine guns. Polle and Gambietz take over the antiaircraft machine gun." Machine gun bullets chewed pieces of wood and metal from the trucks. Soon they could hear the shots. Kneisel and Nehring, the two machine gunners, ripped their machine guns from the side racks and placed them on the side of the truck.

"Faster, Grothe!" The Opel Blitz leapt forward. The village houses rushed closer. Rudolf Brasche saw the first smoking tracer rounds streaking toward the leading truck. Then the first burst of fire whipped from the MG34 mounted on the truck in front of them. The second machine gun joined in, and then the tripod-mounted MG15, which was actually intended for antiaircraft purposes, began to fire as well.

Seconds later the three machine guns in Brasche's truck opened fire. The noise of the three guns nearly deafened him. As Brasche watched, Ecklebe, the second member of the gun crew, loaded a fresh belt of ammunition. Then a burst of fire struck the truck. Heierberg cried out. He let his rifle drop and half fell on Martens, the second member of Kneisel's gun crew. The truck veered hard to the right. A house flew past on the left. They were now safe from the enemy machine gun. The truck came to a small wood and jerked to a stop.

"Get out and follow me!" shouted Unteroffizier Laupert.

Brasche grabbed the two ammunition boxes. He jumped down and ran after Nehring, the leader of his machine gun team. They reached the wood together with the 2nd and 3rd Squads. Feldwebel Wegener appeared from the fourth truck. The Holtsteger squad followed with explosive charges.

"Along here! This dirt road leads right to the bridge."

Breathing heavily, Brasche ran along behind his leader. They had gone no more than four hundred meters when they came under fire from machine guns and fast-firing cannon from ahead and to the right. Glowing steel whipped toward the German soldiers. Brasche and the others hurried on, following their squad leader, who ran into a stand of tall ferns.

In front of Brasche, Nehring fell to the ground heavily. The machine gun flew through the air in a high arc and fell into the ferns. Cursing, Nehring got to his feet, shook himself off, and kept going. The forest thinned out before them. Then they saw the bright band of the road, and finally the bridge appeared in front of them.

Four figures were visible. First Squad fired at them on the run. Three of the men returned fire while the fourth ran back across the bridge.

"Stop, stop! He's going to blow the bridge."

Two bursts were fired at the fourth French soldier. One caught him before he was halfway across the bridge and knocked the man face down.

"Across the bridge and dig in on the other side!"

Rudolf Brasche felt himself getting short of breath but he kept on running, always following his squad leader. They reached the approach to the bridge. Machine gun fire whistled in from the far end of the span. Kneisel threw himself down in the middle of the bridge and opened fire with his machine gun. The enemy troops quickly turned their machine gun on Kneisel. But the Obergefreiter was quicker. His burst struck the enemy position before the French could open fire and silenced the machine gun.

"Platoon, across the bridge in one dash. Go!"

Feldwebel Wegener jumped to his feet. Noticing movement behind the main pillar, he opened fire with his submachine gun while on the run. Rifle shots cracked from the riverbank. A man running behind Brasche cried out and fell to the ground. Then they were on the other side, and the fear that the bridge might blow up under them at any moment vanished.

An enemy soldier appeared ten meters to one side of the Laupert squad. He raised his weapon, but Nehring was quicker, firing his machine gun on the run. The Germans threw themselves down into the cover of the French position. A pair of figures emerged from the bunker, their hands raised.

Shouts drifted over from the wood that flanked the far end of the bridge. Then two armored cars appeared and opened fire on the bridge with cannon and machine guns. Bullets bounced off the steel buttresses and whizzed off in all directions.

"Infantry following behind the armored cars, Herr Feldwebel!"

By running and dodging, Feldwebel Wegener safely reached the hole occupied by the Laupert squad. Out of breath, he let himself tumble in.

"Machine guns open fire on the infantry!" he ordered.

The two machine guns opened up simultaneously. The enemy infantry, which had emerged from the wood, quickly pulled back again. However, two of the seven armored cars now turned and rolled toward the squad's foxhole. The two vehicles turned their guns on the machine gun position. For an instant Brasche saw a red-yellow lance of flame; it seemed to be heading straight for him. He pressed himself against the ground and heard the ringing impacts of bullets striking the steel of the bridge behind him.

    "Pass a belt here, Rudi!"

Brasche roused himself and passed along a fresh belt of ammunition. Bullets clattered against the frontal armor of the armored cars. Nehring aimed somewhat higher. He saw the flash of the impacting bullets. All at once the enemy machine gun stopped firing. The armored car now turned its cannon on the German position and was soon joined by the second vehicle.

"Damn, what's the Holtsteger Squad doing, Herr Feldwebel?"

"They're on the other side. They should have put their antitank rifle to use long ago . . ." The Feldwebel's voice was drowned out by a sharp crack.

    "That was the antitank rifle."

They saw the armor-piercing round strike the leading armored car. Smoke began to curl into the air above the vehicle. The armored car's ammunition supply blew up and the crew bailed out. On the far side of the bridge the 20mm cannon opened fire. The roar of machine guns and the crackle of rifle fire added to the din.

Richard Gambietz crawled forward to Feldwebel Wegener. Rudolf Brasche, whom everyone called Rudi, followed. Nehring and Ecklebe joined them.

"Kneisel, you hold on up front and keep their heads down while we work our way along those blackberry bushes, understood? When we're in the wood, shift your fire to the right so you don't hit us."

Kneisel fired, sweeping the edge of the treed area. Feldwebel Wegener left cover and crept as fast as he could to the left, where he disappeared into the bushes. Brasche followed along behind Gambietz. He saw Nehring appear beside the Feldwebel and disappear again at once.

Brasche felt his hands, which were gripping the handles of the ammunition boxes, becoming wet with sweat. He was afraid, but he knew that he would have to overcome his fear to be effective. The pace quickened. Brasche had to keep pace in case Nehring should need ammunition. Gambietz paused and turned toward Brasche. His young friend with the slightly pointed face tried to smile but only managed a grimace. Brasche caught up with him and moments later they joined Nehring. Just then they heard the roar of an engine and the pointed nose of a French armored car pushed its way through the thicket. They all saw the machine gun and the 20mm cannon.

Feldwebel Wegener signaled silently as Wegener looked his way. He raised one of the four hand grenades he had stuck in his belt. Gambietz nudged Rudi Brasche and pulled out a grenade. Brasche put down the two ammunition boxes. He screwed off the metal caps of two hand grenades and crouched lower in the shadows of the bushes as the armored car rolled directly toward him.

The vehicle came nearer and nearer. Then Brasche spotted movement behind it: enemy infantry, trying to approach the bridge from the flank under the protection of the armored car. The French vehicle was now 30 meters away. Glancing to the side, Brasche saw that Nehring had aimed his machine gun at the enemy troops.

"Go!" shouted the Feldwebel. Rudi Brasche jumped up and threw one of the grenades. Gambietz and the Feldwebel did likewise. The enemy were already firing back when the grenades fell on the armored car. Nehring opened fire with his machine gun. The three hand grenades exploded. Brasche jumped to his feet. A bullet whizzed past his head. Behind him Nehring's machine gun roared again. Three figures appeared in front of him. He ripped the porcelain knob from the grenade and tossed it toward the group of three. At the same time he threw himself headfirst to the ground. Brasche landed hard on a stump. The burst of fire meant for him passed overhead. The blast from the hand grenade silenced the three enemy soldiers.

On the other side, Feldwebel Wegener reached the enemy armored car and threw two hand grenades inside. Gambietz overcame a second group of enemy troops. Then it was quiet, except for the sound of breaking branches as the enemy fled through the woods. There was a fresh outburst of firing to the right and then from the far side of the bridge, where a squad had been left behind.

Infantry Aces: The German Soldier in Combat in WWII (Stackpole Military History)
    By Truffles
Both my husband and my son are military history enthusiasts and I bought this book as a gift for them. It has turned out to be even better than I expected. My husband can't put it down and my son keeps asking him to read it to him.

My husband has read a lot of different military history books and he is very critical of most written works because they are not factual enough or don't contain enough interesting information. This book has actually been very interesting and informative to him and he has asked me to look into getting other books in this series.

I highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in WWII.

Infantry Aces: The German Soldier in World War II

This was a book that once you started reading it was very hard to put down. The book follows about a dozen highly decorated German soldiers on their fighting experiences during World War II. Most of the fighting deals on the Eastern front. This book is backed full of "in your face" combat at close quarters. When reading these experiences, one is amazed that anyone could survive such brutal combat conditions. A must read for the serious student of World War II infantry fighting.

    Good Men, Wrong Side
    By John Matlock
Mr. Kurowski has used his experience as a reporter in the German army during World War II to write a series of books that tell the history of the war from the German individuals point of view.

This book is a set of eight mini-biographies of German Infantry soldiers. Most of them fought through the entire war and surprisingly most of them survived the war, few without wounds. These are not stories of high ranking officers, but of ordinary soldiers of rather low rank who did their job very, very well. They fought in all the theaters of war from freezing in Russia to burning up in Africa.

I am sure that there were men like these in all armies, but these men happened to be German. We can only be happey that they didn't have a whole lot more men like these.

Antonia Honeywell is an exciting new talent
    By Lincs Reader
Our planet is over-crowded and under-resourced. Parts of London have burnt, parts are under water. Whilst the inhabitants of London may exist in body, the most important thing in their lives is their card - without it, they are nobody, and have nothing.

People are homeless and hungry. People live in tents in city parks, or sleep in the Museum. Occasionally, those in charge carry out a cull of the population. London is full of desperate and dispossessed people, food is scarce, and usually comes in tins.

Lalage, or Lalla as she is known as has led a fairly comfortable life in comparison to most. Her father, Michael is an important man, rarely at home and has good links with the rulers, and her mother has ensured that she has food and clean water. The family have been able to keep their comfortable flat in central London, Lalla has a bed, and clothes. However, Lalla has no friends, she only has conversations with her parents. She and her mother visit the British Museum daily, she watches as the exhibits gradually disappear, she and her mother try their best to listen to and help the homeless who have set up camp in the Museum.

For a very long time, Lalla has listened to her father talk of his plans for a Ship. His Ship will take his family, and five hundred other carefully chosen people away to a better place. Finally, the time has come to board the Ship. Shocking events just before their planned departure changes everything for Lalla, she starts the journey in despair, struggling to come to terms with her loss, and yet hoping against hope that there really will be somewhere better over the horizon.

Lalla is vulnerable, innocent and confused. As a character, she is multi-layered, she feels alone despite being surrounded by five hundred other people, all with the same dream. Lalla becomes increasingly concerned. Why does nobody answer her questions? Why does she seem to be the only person on board who has any questions? Where is the Ship heading to?

Antonia Honeywell takes her readers upon the Ship's voyage, accompanying Lalla through one hundred and fifty days on board. I'm not going to talk any more about the plot here as that would just spoil the reading experience for everyone else, and I'd really urge people to read this one.

The Ship is set in the future, I'm not sure when it is, but there are definitely elements of that future world that are already with us. This story made me think deeply about what is happening on our beautiful earth, about human beings and their behaviour and about myself. I'd like to think that I know what choices I would make if I were in Lalla's place, but lets face it, who really knows what they would do?

Despite Lalla's weaknesses, and yes she's very irritating at times, I was behind her all of the way. Her young, enquiring mind made her character both believable and likeable. Her gradual realisation about those closest to her, and their true motives was carefully written and at times, quite emotionally charged.

Antonia Honeywell is an exciting new talent. The Ship is original and quite brilliant. It is terrifying at times, the reality, the possibility, the way that it makes you think. The author explores many themes during the story, not least the question of how far we would go to survive.

Antonia Honeywell’s glimpse of the future is quite terrifyingly real
    By S. Roddom
Opens: Right up to the day we boarded, I wondered whether the ship was just a myth

The narrator of THE SHIP is Lalla, who is an interesting character. At 16 she is part child, part woman, and still formulating her outlook on life, a life that she quickly realises she knows nothing about. She comes over at times as a spoilt brat and utterly self-centred, which is not surprising as she has been the sole focus of her parents for 16 years – protected from the horrors of a disintegrating society for most of that time. Now she is of an age where she can no longer be protected from the reality of life. While she lives in a clean flat in central London with a bed and clothes and protection from the elements and access to what little food there is available; others live rough. Homeless and hungry, dispossessed people and refugees living in the streets, abandoned buildings and parks of London are often culled by the ruling party. Culling means parks being bombed; street dwellers shot and buildings being sealed and all those squatting inside being gassed to death. There is no place to go – the land has been poisoned, the climate change has resulted in large parts of the world flooding and super viruses whipping out millions of people.

But Lalla’s father has a plan. He has stocked a ship, an ark if you will, to save his family and 500 other people and sail to a better place. As THE SHIP opens, the time has come to get on the ship. Lalla’s mother is still reluctant to up roots and go even though society is falling apart however as they are in the flat arguing a shot rings out and Lalla’s mum goes down. Now they have to go to the ship as that is where there is medical help. After a dramatic departure the ship sets sail and Lalla watches her mother die.

“…The woman and the doctor stood quietly by, and when he fell back, they caught him and led him away, supporting him on either side. I longed to call out, to go with them. But my mother was dead; I had made her death a painful one. And so I hid, unable to move, unable to cry out to the doctor who thought I’d killed her, or to the father who had, however briefly, forgotten me…”

Lalla has to go through her morning period and author Antonia Honeywell must have experienced great loss to perfectly recreate a teen who has reached the end of her tether. Gradually though she starts to take an interest in what is happening around her – and with the interest comes the questions. Just what is her father up to? Despite being on a ship with 500 other people, and a young man who is interested in her as a girlfriend, Lalla is lonely and confused. She gradually understands that all of the others have been to hell and back – suffered as she didn’t think people could suffer – but she still resents them being there and almost worshiping her father as he becomes increasingly messianic almost. As she hears the stories of those who have been through these horrors her compassionate side is revealed and she has a big heart and wants to help everyone. Even those who have not been chosen to join the ship.

Her father encourages everyone to not hang onto the past, he becomes their son, their father, their children, and their future. But what is the future going to be, and how can he expect Lalla to forget her mother? As she learns about what has happened in the rest of the world, Lalla starts to believes that there can be no future. And the dreams she has when her mother speaks to her only compound her overwhelming feelings of hopelessness – why does no one on the ship seem worried about where they are going – what the future is going to bring?

I really, really enjoyed this story. THE SHIP is a brilliant concept and though Honeywell’s glimpse of the future is quite terrifyingly real (as there are hints already around the globe that it can happen the way she foresees) it is also thought provoking and it is not too late to start lobbying to change the direction of our world. In the end the focus of the story is how far would you go to survive? THE SHIP is a debut novel and I for one will be keeping an eye out for more from this author.

    The Ship

Lalage Paul is sixteen and lives in London with her mother, Anna and father Michael. This is a dystopian vision of a London, and a world, of the future. Resources have run out – food and water are scarce and people have to produce an identity card or face being shot on sight. Lalage was only seven when the collapse hit Britain and riots, looting and disasters overtook the country; along with the collapse of the government, who were replaced by the military. However, Michael Paul became powerful and rich under the new rulers and his programme, ‘the Dove’ helps the government control identity and movement. Although he claims to have created order from chaos, the reality is that Big Ben is under water and tent cities have sprung up in Regent’s Park.

Her father’s comparative wealth, means that Lalage has a comfortable life compared to others, but she is isolated and lonely. Her mother takes her almost daily to the British Museum, to feed the homeless who populate the halls, along with the dwindling exhibits. London is desolate and dangerous, but Anna Paul is loathe to leave. For, throughout Lalage’s childhood, her parents have whispered of a ship, which will take them away. It is the promised land that will solve all their problems and, when Michael Paul forces the issue, Lalage is keen to leave – despite her mother’s reluctance.

Indeed, the ship does exist. Michael Paul has chosen five hundred people to leave with them, including a young boy called Tom, who Lalage is attracted to. After the dangerous existence on shore, the passengers seem happy to accept everything at face value – the abundant supplies, comfort, warmth and safety, lull them into complacency. Only Lalage seems to question where they are going and how long it will take – but nobody seems to want to answer her…

This is not my usual sort of book, but I did enjoy it. The idea of a modern kind of Noah’s Ark, floating in a ruined world, is an interesting one. Michael Paul is a creepy megalomaniac; a man who is looked up to and admired, but is unable to accept he is wrong about anything. It seemed unlikely that only Lalage would really question his motives, but considering the state of the world they have left behind, possibly many adults would be happy to just accept safety when it is offered. It does make you wonder how you would react under similar circumstances and the setting was an interesting one. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publishers, via NetGalley, for review.
