Too Much Fluff

I first learned PHP from Luke Welling and Laura Thomson's excellent "PHP and MySQL Web Development," and bought 'MySQL/PHP Database Applications' to provide an alternative perspective on solving problems. Unfortunately, this book doesn't offer enough content to warrant its high price.
A full 58 pages is devoted to a PHP function reference which is a bit of a joke because PHP has one of the better online function references available. Code examples are printed with very large font again taking up more space than is necessary.
Most important, though, some of these examples are a little bit suspect.
They present a Catalog application written using Object Oriented Programming (OOP). This would have been valuable except that the classes they create are so specific that they couldn't be re-used -- basically negating the value of OOP to begin with.
They do provide a couple of examples of good and bad relational database schema, but that isn't really worth the cost of this book.

Amazon makes you leave a heading and a comment so I am typing this up to say its a good product and does what it says. If you are reading this, buy it. I don't leave 5 stars unless the product exceeds my demanding expectations. If it falls short of doing 100% of what it says, I leave 1 star.

Loved it!

I'm puzzled by the negative reviews. I'm a 30 year vet in computing, recently retired, and doing web/tech computing part time. I've needed to grasp parts of computing that I haven't been involved with, and boy did these guys get it right!

I loved the comment about "The bulk of this chapter is for those of you who have made it to the early 21st century without working with relational databases!" That's me! And the writing was just right in terms of code hints and kinks along with clear explainations of database concepts.

I'm reading the first edition, saw the second edition was out, and ordered it.

I will agree, however, that there are *many* editing mistakes where they mistake terms or have errors in their tables/code. Hopefully the 2nd edition solves this.

Much has been written about Tolkien's work; Carpenter's splendid biography, Tolkien (1977), reveals fascinating insights into the man's life and books. Interestingly however, until now his art has been mostly ignored; Hammond and Scull reverse this oversight in an informative exploration that includes more than 200 reproductions of the drawings, sketches, and paintings Tolkien made from his early childhood through his final years. In a loosely chronological, well-documented text, the authors discuss Tolkien's early work, the "Father Christmas" letters to his children (recently released with facsimile letters), the images made in connection with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings cycle (which, unlike his stories, received mixed reviews), and his later fascination with decorative patterns and designs. The open and inviting format and the reproductions of his art make this a Tolkien lover's dream, and the insightful text will quickly capture attention as well. Barbara Elleman

Author and Illustrator!

J.R.R. Tolkien was a great author (millions of readers can attest to that). His talents, however, weren't confined to the written word. Professor Tolkien was also a proficient artist and illustrator. His illustrations graced the cover of each book of the "Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) trilogy (paperback) in the early 80s -- when I first read the series. I was unaware at the time that the the covers were reproductions of the author's handiwork. The art enhanced my LOTR 'experience' (for me, an '80s teen, Tolkien's books were portals to alternate realities and were not simply good reads). "J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator" does, of course, present the expected, and I daresay obligatory, snapshots of Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth. However, it isn't limited to the vast expanse of that realm. The book also provides insights into what inspired many of his other artistic endeavors and shows many of the fruits of that inspiration. Truth be told, I purchased this book primarily for the eye candy. The commentary is an added bonus -- like a colorful eye candy wrapper imprinted with ingredients. If you like Tolkien, art and escapism, this book is for you.

Much better than I even expected!

This book is much better than I thought it would be. Mostly I was curious to see more of Tolkien's art, but the text that goes along with it is wonderful. Christopher Tolkien asked the authors to write this book to showcase his father's art, and they do a wonderful job of describing the pictures, pointing out details that I missed, and putting them in context of when and where and why Tolkien drew them. Several versions of the same pictures are shown so you can see how Tolkien worked through a problem until he found the best final product. Plus the inspirations for some of the pictures are also shown, to show that Tolkien copied others sometimes, but in the end put his own mark on it. By copied, I don't mean plagarized. He drew his eagle from a book of birds to make sure he got it right, or was inspired by other artists particular works. Highly recommended if you are a Tolkien fan. If you are just into art and not a Tolkien fan, then I don't think this will interest you.

For Every Tolkein Fan

This book contains J.R.R. Tolkein's artwork (the stuff he did himself). This provides unique glimpses into Middle Earth the way he saw it (as other reviewers have mentioned).

Additionally, this work contains many non-Middle-Earth-related works. The section on his early works help clarify his other paintings by providing an artistic sense of the world around him, and the section on artwork for children is helpful too (includes pieces from "Roverandum" among others).

This is not just finished art though. There are sketches on letters or notes, for example, and one case of color doodles on a newspaper classified section (I found this one particularly amusing).

Highly recommended.

Not a book for me.

While the book was informative, I was overwhelmed by the topics discussed, and not used to the dry tone used. Probably, this is not a book for me, but I will still encourage readers with a deep interest in facts and policies to pick this up.

Inspiring Artwork

As a fantasy lover, I am a big fan of this book and find it very inspiring. I think any dragon lover would be delighted to own a copy.

Unlike some of the authors other books (Dragonart, Dragonart Evolution ), this is not an instruction manual to learn to draw in her style - it is a gallery of creatures. These creatures are part manga, somewhat anthropomorphic and are fantastically imaginative. All of the images have a distinct recognizable visual style and most have been digitally colored.

Dragons are definitely the artists forte and in this book you will find lion faced Asian dragons, fur covered tundra dragons, feather winged flying dragons, elemental dragons and fairy dragons to name a few. You will also find at least one phoenix, griffin, unicorn and a multitude of creatures you have never imagined.

All the images have a title and usually a paragraph with a brief description of the artwork. The description might also include information on publishing, commissions, or design decisions.

A must-buy for DragonArt's fans

DragonArt Ultimate Gallery is an exquisite art collection from the talented illustrator J. "NeonDragon" Peffer. This collection feature mostly digital artwork of dragons. However, you couldn't get a most diverse group of dragons in a single lair. This is a good book that will sure find its way into the hands of J. Peffer's fans, but beware of its binding.

This is mostly a book about J. Peffer's artwork. A gallery of sorts at your reach. If you are expecting an instructional book, you have many other options from the same author. However, Peffer goes her way to sprinkle a tip here and there throughout the book.

This book contains a lot of new imagery, but obviously you would expect to see a few from her previous books. The easier ones for me to spot are the images from DragonArt Fantasy Characters. You'll get a full page of the Demon, the Banshee, the Wisps and the Centaurs titled "The Druid and the Dryad" in this book. There is also a framed image of the Elves title "Deep Concentration" in this book and the Fairy at 1/3 of its size, among others.

There are plenty of dragons, but I figured that most were from Dragonart Evolution. The most remarkable are the two pages layout of the Lung Dragon titled "Eastern Flair", the page and a half layout of the Sea Dragon titled "Tidecaller" and a full page layout of the Feathered Dragon titled "Frostfire" which changes the hue to a bluish scheme on the left side to represent ice. And there are plenty more.

What about Dragonart? Well, the original DragonArt is mostly an instructional how-to-draw dragons book. However, there it was the Kirin!

It goes without saying that J. Peffer's artwork deserve five stars. Her presentation of humanoid figures lies more toward the anime side, which may not appeal to every one, but her dragons are as superb as ever.

However, where this book almost loses one star is not about the art, but its binding. I try to place it flat on a table and I immediately regretted it. I could easily see the seam between some pages, which reminded me about the fate of several AD&D hardcover that I still own. It may seem a bit too picky, but I expect to use this book a lot.

Overall, I liked this book. If you are new to J. Peffer's artwork, browse her books in Amazon or find her art on the net. Once you a hooked, comeback for this book.

This book should be a "must have" for anyone who loves to draw and loves dragon. The figures are well articulated and the NeonDragon's walkthroughs are simple, clean and easy enough to follow for both a beginner and advance artists looking to get an edge on creative designs or new inspiration.

I really can not rate this book high enough.

She studies covert operations, culture and assimilation, and advanced encryption, and has learned to speak 14 languages. Her troubles begin when she falls for Josh, a local boy who has no clue about her real identity. Keeping her training secret forces her to lie to her new love, which leads to comic complications. Subplots include Cammie's relationship with her mother–the headmistress at Gallagher–and her grief over the loss of her father, who died while on a spying assignment. The teen's double life leads to some amusing one-liners, and the invented history of the Gallagher Girls is also entertaining, but the story is short on suspense. The stakes never seem very high since there are no real villains, and the cutesy dialogue quickly becomes grating. However, the novel has been optioned for a film and will likely attract readers who enjoy lighthearted, frothy tales and squeaky-clean romances. It has been four years and a thousand books since I’ve read it, but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls; in fact, now I feel like I appreciate the nuances of the book more. Back when I had read it, I considered it as a light-hearted fun novel about teenage spies and the trouble they get into, but now I see how varied the theme of the book was. Sure, it starts out as fun – Cammie and her friends, Bex and Liz, are now sophomores at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Women, a school for geniuses training in espionage, and now they get to do Covert Ops. There is a new girl in school – Macey McHenry, whom they do not know yet but is soon going to be their best friend. And on their first mission out in town, Cammie gets her first taste of normal life in Josh, a cute regular guy who notices her, despite her being very good at going unnoticed. What begins as a side project to find if he is shady soon develops into a struggle in Cammie’s heart.

While the tone of the novel is mostly jovial and the fact that the protagonist is a little boy-crazy on getting her first boyfriend, the book goes further into why Cammie is attracted to Josh. He presents a normality she has never experienced being a part of Gallagher Academy; she decisively gets to choose between her life and this picket-fence picture. All her life, she has been known as the daughter of a missing (possibly dead) agent, and here out in the real world, nobody knows that. She gets lost in her legend for a bit, but soon hard decisions have to be made, and she commits to her life as a covert operative.

Most importantly, even with the seriousness of the life as a spy and the danger it comes with, Carter infuses joy and simplicity by bringing it in a group of genius girls who have way too many skills, and a lot of love for each other. It is cute, certainly, but also slightly grim. Overall, the book is brilliant and the extra epilogue was a treat.

Prep school princess or kick-butt spy?

I'm a middle school librarian and bought this to replace an often checked-out, worn-out and probably eventually lost copy of the book my school had. The kids love this book! It's about Cammie, who is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a scool that is supposed to be for geniuses but is actually a school for spies. Cammie loses it when she meets an ordinary, cute boy, even though she knows how to kill a man seven different ways and speaks 14 languages. This book is sort of "Princess Diaries" cute like that; you really like Cammie and (kid or grown up) you are cheering for her to catch the bad guys and catch the boy, too.

Really, really surprised by how much I loved this book!

Having skimmed a sample of this many years ago (and not being really into the US covers; i'm really happy that my kindle copy downloaded with the UK covers. I wonder if this is a Europe thing?), this series didn't really appeal to me even though I knew a lot of people who were absolutely extatic when the final book released 3 years ago. Well, none of them were as persistent on pushing this on me as Eri because let me tell you this book series is her legacy through and through and I'm so glad she didn't give up and pushed this a ton on our group of friends because I really, really loved this one!

The writing is a little hard to get used to at first, but I got used to it eventually. (Mostly). It becomes enjoyable and I laughed quite a bit. The characters are great and I'm so excited to get to know them better. The spy stuff is hella fun (why aren't these books movies yet????) and so is the plot. I hope we get to see super mysterious spy stuff later on in this series (which I'm thinking is the case, because they're spies in training to be field agents someday) and if so i can't wait for it. My fav part is the friendships and Cammie & Rachel's mother-daughter relationship (I already cried twice over them; yeaaaa i was told that the first two are fluffy but THERE IS NOTHING FLUFFY ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP THE TEARS OKAY; it's MOSTLY fluffy though (◡‿◡✿)).

A few notes: I wish that we had been shown a bit more of Macey's shift into this group of friends; Cammie's narrative claims that there are "girls of all shapes and sizes and skin color" but Bex is the only canon girl mentioned with darker skin color (where are girls of Asian, Latin, Arabian origin?) and all the girls that have a bit more description about them are described as very lean and pretty (except Cammie but her opinion on herself is highly biased). So this is one thing I hope either disappears in claims or is developed, because saying that there are girls like this, but no actual proof? Eh. Plus showing/telling & representation are different things altogether. There was something else I wanted to mention but I can't remember.. Probably irrelevant then.

Anyhoooow, I really liked this and I can't wait to read more *retreats into reading cave with book 2*

About the Author
Andrzej is a father of two, husband (of one - because bigomy is frowned upon apparently...), reasonable guitarist, games lover, Batman nerd and Star Wars geek.

Over the years he has had a few jobs, from web designer, to learning technologist to consultant. What has always remained the same is his belief that games have much more to offer the world than just entertainment.

This led him to getting involved with gamification in his spare time. Now he is a recognised expert on the topic, writing a regular blog about gamification, keynote speaking, consulting on and designing solutions - and writing the occasional book.

Putting Gamification to Work

Amazing!! I've been studying ninja monkeys in the wild for the last ten years. This is the first time someone actually captures them while they're playing...

Seriously, if you want to understand the foundations of gamification, and its relation to game thinking, this is a great way to start. The book not only clears the myth/confusion that often times surrounds the topic, it also takes a deeper, more pragmatic dive into user types and their motivation, which is key in building gamified solutions. Especially appreciated the examples that clarifies the theory behind some of the design implications. I highly recommend you keep this book on your bookshelf, and use it often as you're planning your next gamification project.

The only thing I missed was the colors. Overall, it's a great resource!

About the Author
Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese film director, animator, and writer. A native of the Nagano prefecture in Japan, he studied Japanese literature at Chuo University. He traces his passion for creation to the manga, anime, and novels he was exposed to while in middle school. Considered one of the best animators in the world today, he is often called the "next-Miyazaki". Shinkai developed his abilities as a video game designer for FalCom, where he worked on the cult-classic role-playing game Y"S. Shinkai is unique as an animator as he cut his teeth by producing almost all elements many of his works - from animation to music composition to voice acting. He has won numerous awards: 12th DoGA CG Animation Award; 1st New Tokyo International Animation FestivalGrand Prize; 7th Kobe Animation Prize; 6th Japanese Media Art; Awardfor Digital Media; 34th Nebula Award(World Con); 59th Mainichi Films Animation Prize; 2007 Asia Pacific Film Award; and theLancia Platinum Grand Prize (Italy).

Exceptionally beautiful

I've actually reviewed the original Japanese edition 新海誠美術作品集空の記憶 ~ The sky of the longing for memories ~ which was published in 2008. Publisher Vertical Comics has provided a huge fan service by translating the book into English. It's certainly worth translating and more people should get to see this book.

The only difference I noticed is the lack of dust jacket. Even the paper used is the low gloss type. Colours are reproduced wonderfully.

A Sky Longing for Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai is the artbook that collects the background art for 5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices from a Distant Star.

I've watched those three anime films many years ago and can't really remember what the stories were about. But one thing that I cannot forget is the beautiful background art in those films.

The commentary provides talks about the design aspect of each scene and it's really insightful. Now that all the text has been translated to English, I can now understand the amount of work that goes behind each painting.

Attention to details is amazing. You'll find out that all the background art are well researched and tediously put together. Some scenes are the results of several photo references used together, while some others are painted over photos while taking into account the colour scheme. There's research done on design of trains, vending machines, LED lights on signboards, routes of the trains so that they can be accurately portrayed in drawing. To draw Akari's homemade lunch, the staff actually cooked and packed the meal, then photographed it for use as reference. All those tiny words on fare charts, open pages of books are actually all hand drawn in. Environment scenes painted with photo reference take into account the seasons and colour of the air.

There's something about Japanese anime art that makes them look so fine. The level of detail in the background really makes a huge difference to the visual aesthetics. Every piece of art in this book is perfectly composed, and colour scheme carefully chosen. It's just awe-inspiring to see how many pieces of art there are to come out from the films. It's not all from Makoto Shinkai as there are other artists involved as well, many are interviewed at the back of the book. There's also a section that talks about how the scenes are created for animation.

I highly recommend this book for its stunning art.

Beautiful

Makoto Shinkai's art book " a sky longing for memories" is book is a faithful reproduction of the Japanese edition (minus dust jacket and wrap sleeve) in English. The book is filled with stills and background art from Shinkai's films. The book is full color with lots of images and provides tidbits of information on the techniques used to create the color drenched settings that have become Shinkai's signature.

Most of the text in the book is strictly information documenting the scene a image was used. The back section of book includes an artist "how to" describing Shinkai's work process and materials/technology he used. There is also an essay and interview to bring the book to a close.

Scale is too small

I really love Makoto Shinkai backgrounds, colors, details and everything.

It is a good book... but scrolling through pages made me feel like I want to see each picture in a bigger scale, I feel like I need to zoom-in, but I can't (at least full page for each image or larger scale for the whole book would be good).
It is more of a collection of background thumbnails, or pieces that scaled down to that size, than art-book to appreciate every piece of his amazing art. Quite a disappointment for me personally.

Good things, that paper is good. Also, they have part in a book where they talk about techniques of creating these kind of backgrounds. Very nice.

About the Author
Detroit area resident, Bob Moats, has been writing short stories and plays for as long as he can remember. He has lost most of his original stories, typed or handwritten, in the numerous moves he has made from his hometown of Fraser, Michigan to Northern Michigan, to Las Vegas and back to Fraser, where he now lives. Moats became one of the causalities of unemployment a year ago, and had time on his hands to finally pursue a life long dream of writing a full blown crime novel. Thus was born the first book, "Classmate Murders".

Best Jim Richards Book Yet

I have lost track of which book this is in the Jim Richards series, but it was, in my opinion, the best one yet. The plot was exciting and, as with each subsequent book, the characters continued to evolve and become a little more fleshed out.

I also think the writing was much smoother than some of the earlier books and the plot more complex.

To get the most out of the series, I think it is important to start with the first book and read them all in order. For me, the appeal of this series lies in the recurring characters, who have become as familiar now as old friends. I am looking forward to the next book immensely!

As far fetched as these books sound they really could be true. The author really could be hitting the nail on the head - as crazy as the world is today. As usual enjoyed another Jim Richards story.
