You need to know if you cattle are cycling properly.

I found this book to be just what is needed for heat detection in our herd. It is not a book that breaks down the science of reproduction in cattle. There are lots of books for that. This book targets how to tell when a heifer is in heat in your herd. This a great for those of us with small herds using artificial insemination as a main means of breeding. Can be used in all herd sizes, I found it really valuable to our small ranch. I also feel this book would make a great supplement to anyone looking to be more educated in cattle reproduction. If you are going to keep cattle and manage your herd, you need to know how to correctly identify if a female is cycling properly. Great book for that.

This book is simple to understand. There's not a lot of extra information that is not needed for the heat detection process. Short read with a lot of helpful info. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in heat detection. It was exactly what I was looking for, straight and to the point.

The process consists of concrete situations that put the moral issue in the real-life perspective; a detailed examination of the underlying questions, with arguments supporting each side; discussion questions for group interaction or personal reflection; and suggested readings, resources for those who wish to pursue the questions in more depth.

About the Author
Gregory C. Higgins is the chair of the religious studies department at Christian Brothers Academy where he has taught for the past twenty-six years. He is the author of four other books published by Paulist Press, including Christianity 101, Twelve Theological Dilemmas, and Where Do You Stand?

Reaching Mature Decisions

The book's content is "deliberately limited" to some sensitive "life" issues "about which the Vatican or the National Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued some official teaching." These teachings (as well as the reasoning behind them) are even-handedly presented. But contrarian perspectives are also given a hearing--e.g., on war we get not only just war theory, but also the point of view of Christian militarism and that of pacifism.

Does this potentially muddy the decision-making waters? The author rather hopes so--"I believe that those who have little background in these matters benefit from first hearing both sides before having to take a stand." Being able to simply parrot a party line is NOT an outcome that the author desires for his readers.

An introductory chapter on moral reasoning, seven to ten practical cases on each issue (a college student selling his sperm to a sperm bank, for instance), open-ended and provocative discussion questions, and suggested readings for greater depth are provided.

This reviewer has been using a very similar approach for decades in programs on moral decision making. The participants invariably come away with a deeper and more insightful grasp of the issues and their fundamental or circumstantial complexities.

A great read.

In my personal experience, I have met a number of Catholics who are unenlightened and unthoughtful, and many who are. Higgins certainly fits in with the latter. He is a man of intellect and integrity whose works do not warrant such harsh criticism. He is without a doubt a brilliant theologian, and his ideas cannot be dismissed by such ad hominem attacks. He is deeply pious but also reasonable, and if there is anyone who truly represents the ideal of Catholicism, it is Higgins.

About the Author

Garry Martin, a native Manitoban, attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship, where he received the BA degree. He then attended Arizona State University for the MA and PhD degrees. Garry returned to Manitoba in 1966 and taught in the Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba until his retirement at the end of 2008. He is currently a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the U of M, and he continues to supervise graduate students, teach part-time, and write and publish. He has co-authored or co-edited 8 books and over 150 journal articles on various areas in behavioral psychology. His book, Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It, with Dr. Joseph Pear, first published in 1978, is used as a primary text at many universities in 14 countries and various editions have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean. His research on behavioral training technologies for improving the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities and children with autism has been supported continuously by the Medical Research Council of Canada, and now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for the past 32 years. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences around the world. He has supervised 38 Masters theses, and 32 PhD theses at the University of Manitoba, and has received numerous honors and awards, including induction into the Royal Society of Canada. At the 2010 Annual Convention of the Canadian Psychological Association, Garry received the CPA Education and Training Award, the most prestigious education and training award the discipline confers in Canada.

Dr. Joseph J. Pear, Professor of Psychology at the University of Manitoba, received the B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University. A fellow of Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) and Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Pear has done both basic and applied research. His early applied work was with children with developmental disabilities at the St. Amant Centre, where he founded the Behaviour Modification Unit (now the Psychology Department) in the early 1970s. More recently, he developed Computer-Aided Personal System of Instruction (CAPSI), an instructional program based on the Keller Plan. CAPSI is an award winning program that is being used to teach a number of courses at University of Manitoba and at several other universities in Canada and the United States. It is also a research tool that Dr. Pear and his graduate students use to research the teaching and learning dimensions of university education. Dr. Pear has also done basic research with pigeons and fish using a tracking system that he developed. In addition to Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It with Dr. Garry Martin, Dr. Pear has written two other books: The Science of Learning and A Historical and Contemporary Look at Psychological Systems. He has also written numerous research articles and two encyclopedia articles: “Psychological Systems” in The Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology (Fourth Edition) and “Physiological Homeostasis and Learning” in Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning. He has received awards for Outstanding Contribution to Behaviour Analysis in Manitoba and for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology. He also received the Fred S. Keller Behavioral Education Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education.

Textbook, But Not

I used this book as a special education undergraduate. I found it contained all of the essential information in a format that was not bogged down with technical language. I have since loaned the book to several parents who found its information useful and its style easy and unintimidating. It is full of common, everyday examples in order to help one transition from the theoretical to the concrete.

A practical book that works

There is a ton of usable information in this book. The problem is getting past the jargon and text book manner in which it is written. It really is more for university students than the lay person. Keep in mind that it is a text book for 2 consecutive psychology semesters. So, if the answers do not jump out at you, then do not get frustrated. I have read it through a few times and still do not grasp some of it. If you have the patience to apply something as simple as the operant conditioning, you can actually make a habit within a month. For instance, I used to reward myself with 15 minutes of fiction reading for every chapter of biology that I read. Result? I went from a D to a B within a couple of months. I have helped some of my clients do the same procedure with quitting smoking and sticking with fitness plans. This book is one of the few university text books that I kept after my degree.

This is a very detailed book about behavior modification. It literally traces the history of behavioral modification from its origins and progresses into actual techniques that can be used in a variety of setting. Some of the chapters are quite dense, yet interesting. There is a comprehensive summary and the authors do a wonderful job with breaking down large units of information into readable points. There is a useful guide for functional analysis provided. The behavior contract is generic, but a decent basis for an individualized one. Finally, many behavioral methods are explained in simple terms and there are numerous examples that illustrate their usefulness.

About the Author

Sean Fay Wolfe was sixteen years old when he finished the first book of the Elementia Chronicles in 2013. He is a Minecraft player and an author of action-adventure tales. Sean is an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, a five-time all-state musician, a second-degree Black Belt in Shidokan karate, and has created many popular online games in the Scratch programming environment. He goes to school and lives in Rhode Island with his mother, father, two brothers, three cats, and a little white dog named Lucky.

A Classroom Teacher Review

As a teacher, when I came across this author initially through Twitter I was very intrigued because my 4th graders often talk about Minecraft. I bought the Kindle edition so I could easily preview it not knowing whether or not I would really want to buy a copy to have in my classroom. I'm so glad to have made the initial purchase because my students (and I) have been on fire with it ever since the About the Author page and the Prologue.

This read-aloud choice was definitely the class favorite of the year. One day, when I had to close reading time, one student said, "There's never a good time to stop reading!" It's true, because with a book like this one with well-developed characters, suspense, good vs evil, and lots of action, you don't want to put it down.

We finished the book today, our last day of school. We were amazed by the ending and so watched the book trailer for Book 2: The Noctem Ascension. WOW! One student said, "I have to read that book!" What a fabulous way to end the year with kids excited for reading the next in the series.
Now it's time to buy (preorder) the trilogy for the classroom!

A great series!

The Elementia Chronicles is a fiction series of three books (Quest For Justice, The New Order, and Herobrine’s Message) by Sean Fay-Wolfe. All of the action takes place in Minecraft biomes, including the Ender Desert, Mushroom Islands, and Tundra. The main protagonist is a player named Stan who is the President of Elementia, a Minecraft server. He believes that all players should be treated equally, regardless of their level. (He is also an excellent axe fighter.) Stan goes against King Kev, who believes that lower level players are taking all of the resources. King Kev wants them kicked out of Element City. My favorite character was Leonidas, who is a player who first works for King Kev and then for the Noctem Alliance. Leonidas is a determined character who acts on his beliefs and is willing to go to great lengths for justice. My favorite scenes were the battles between Stan and King Kev because you really don’t know who is going to win as they play out. Fay-Wolfe definitely chooses words that match the situations and events well.

I feel that the series improved over the course of the three books. The third book was my favorite because there was a lot of action. There is also an exciting character, Herobrine, who is introduced in the third, and that created some new possibilities. Overall, the series will definitely appeal to people who play Minecraft, but others who enjoy a good adventure story will like it, as well. It helps to have a working understanding of Minecraft vocabulary as you read. For instance, if you have no idea of what a creeper or NPC is, you might be a little confused in places.

A Wonderful Surprise

I purchased Quest For Justice: A Minecraft Novel (Elementia Chronicles) (Volume 1) for my 9 year old son, who loves Minecraft and is an avid reader. Prior to Quest For Justice we've found that most Minecraft books claiming to be "novels" are in reality short stories of about 100 pages or less, nearly all of them written by author's only passingly familiar with the game. Not so with this book. It is a solid 400 page novel and, in my sons words, Sean Fay Wolfe "gets it"(Minecraft).
After finishing the book in just over 3 days of obsessive reading my son set it down and immediately asked if we could go to the book store and pick up the next one. "I really want to know what happens next, dad".
I started thumbing through the book later that night because I was curious to see how a 16 year old author had captivated my son's attention and quickly found that I was getting pulled into the story. The layout and cadence of writing create an engaging flow for the reader; the storyline is well thought out and imaginative; the character development is rich and detailed.
In short, Sean Fay Wolfe is a very talented young author and Quest For Justice is a fun, well written book that will capture the imagination of any Minecraft fan.

About the Author
Graham McNeill has written more Horus Heresy novels than any other Black Library author! His canon of work includes Vengeful Spirit and his New York Times bestsellers A Thousand Sons and the novella The Reflection Crack’d, which featured in The Primarchs anthology. Graham’s Ultramarines series, featuring Captain Uriel Ventris, is now six novels long, and has close links to his Iron Warriors stories, the novel Storm of Iron being a perennial favourite with Black Library fans. He has also written a Mars trilogy, featuring the Adeptus Mechanicus. For Warhammer, he has written the Time of Legends trilogy The Legend of Sigmar, the second volume of which won the 2010 David Gemmell Legend Award, and the anthology Elves. Originally hailing from Scotland, Graham now lives and works in Nottingham.

Solid Writing, Excellent Characters

Ive never read any of Graham McNeills books before, but after this I might go back to reading "regular" 40K books by him, such as the Ultramarine trilogy.

Vengeful Spirit brings us back to the main Horus Heresy story line after much meandering of side-stories/side plots. Finally we're getting back into the war and one step closer to the battle for Terra. While I dont mind Black Library wanting to cash in on the serie's success, quite a number of the series has gone very far off the main story line.

The novel itself has very solid writing and the chapters are nicely spaced out; not too long, not too short. The characters act and behave like they have in the other novels, so there is good consistency that has been a problem with some of the other Primachs when written by different authors.

The story follows the planning of the assaination of Horus by inserting a team of "Knights in Grey" (very clever) on board the Vengeful Spirit to plant beacons and mark out important locations on board. There is some build up to this point as the team is assembled and there is conflict within the team, since it is made up of marines from different legions.
The story also attempts to tie in charactes from many of the other Horus Heresy novels.
This leads to my first of two issues which I will summarise below:-
1) If you have not been listening to any of the audio stories but have only been reading the novels, like myself, then there is a HUGE leap/gap of knowledge that you can only find by doing some research. As well as recurring characters from the first set of three novels. I spent a bit of time trying to find out who was who and from what novel. There is much missing infomation.
2)There is 1 odd inconsistancy in the story, +MINOR PLOT SPOILER+ in the end fight scene of the novel, Loken confronts abandon and a brawl ensues between the Knights and the Luna Wolves in a room, which Horus seems to have strangely disappeared and then reappears at the very very end of the fight. I can only presume he is eating popcorn and watching his minions fight for him, which is oddly out of character since the whole novel up to this point is about Horus getting involved.

So if you've never read any previous Horus Heresy novels, this is probably a terrible book to start, and it certainly rewards loyal fans rather than the casual reader. BUt if you are a loyal fan of the series, then this book will not disappoint.

Fulfilling His Destiny

In short, Vengeful Spirit is amazing.

The novel focuses on two quests: Warmaster Horus Lupercal's search for information that will ultimately lead to secret knowledge of how his father, the Emperor of Mankind, became as powerful as he is in the hopes of replicating that achievement; and a small strike team's mission to infiltrate the Warmaster's command ship (which is the novel's title) and mark a path through its interior by which to assassinate him.

Over the course of the tale, you see both the villain and the unlikely heroes in both positive and negative lights. Horus is a ruthless, genocidal madman, but he genuinely gives a damn about his friends and brother Primarchs, taking the time even to personally restore their weaponry to its full glory and talking with them about how they're holding together after harrowing ordeals. On the other end, the strike team (led by Garviel Loken, a character explored in Horus Rising) is trying to do the right thing that any sane person would do and help kill Horus, but his inner doubts are eating him up, and the task only becomes more difficult the closer he gets to his goal.

The bulk of the novel is the Battle of Molech, which is a war both on the world itself and in the stars above it. Orbital defense platforms, space cruiser clashes, boarding attacks, everything goes. It's a massive and brutal clash, and once the Traitor Legions hit the surface, things only get worse (their battles become so pitched that you'd swear all of the Godzilla monsters were hired by the Call of Duty game makers to star in a mega-war flick directed by a coked-out Micheal Bay). Giant robots, demons, super-soldiers, tanks, missiles, orbital bombardment, everything you can think of shows up (and yes, that's only the tip of the iceberg).

You really connect with not just Loken and Horus, but also a number of characters both attacking and defending Molech. Horus's personal council each display depth of character that makes you want to root for their survival, even when they're murderous jerks. Similarly, though so many of them die (and typically horribly), you want a bunch of the defenders to escape at least that battle they're caught up in, if only to die in defense of their home a little later. You want the attackers to win because they're trying to build a better Imperium for everyone and you want the defenders to prevail because their home is being destroyed.

By the conclusion of the story, even though the war is still on for some time to come, you have what you came looking for: a bloody, epic-scale clash between an Emperor-to-be and the planet standing in the way of his destiny. It's a thick read (over 600 pages), but you'll love every word of it and then some.

I wanted to like this book

I wanted to like this book, but it just isn't good. I've read most of the Horus Heresy, but this book is just not interesting. I got about 150 pages in and just couldn't read any more. The book says alot but nothing is happening. Maybe later it gets good but it takes way too long to get there to hold my attention. It also treats the reader badly, it references several events that happened in other books but if you haven't read those books or have simply forgotten it treats you like you read it yesterday with no reminders of these events.
