About the Author
Margaret Dilloway has been a writer ever since she learned how to write. In high school she was a California Arts Scholar in Creative Writing and she won a National Council of Teacher English writing award. She practiced writing in a variety of forms, such as being a theater critic and contributing editor for two weekly newspapers, doing technical writing, and playwriting, before publishing three critically acclaimed books for adults, How to Be an American Housewife, The Care and Handling of Roses with Thorns, and Sisters of Heart and Snow. Her research for this book included a trip to Japan and a samurai sword-fighting class. Margaret lives in southern California with her husband, three children, and a Goldendoodle named Gatsby. Choong Yoon grew up in Seoul, South Korea. As a kid, he loved drawing animated characters and copying comic book panels. I was thoroughly entertained throughout this entire book!

I was thoroughly entertained throughout this entire book.

I love the story of an unlikely hero – and I can’t imagine a more unlikely hero than Xander (at least in the way he has presented himself to us).

Some of Xander’s shortcomings certainly have their origins in typical pre-teen insecurities, but as he compares himself to his classmates, Xander comes out lacking – in almost every field.

I loved the dynamics between Xander and Peyton. Peyton, the athletic, good-looking, polite best friend is destined now to take the role of “side-kick” or “bodyguard,” depending on who’s describing it. Then add Jinx to the equation, who Peyton rightfully mistrusts, and we have a witty, entertaining threesome, who seem unlikely to be able to save the world.

Action-packed, with clever dialogue, and impressive character growth, I can highly recommend Xander to not only middle-grade, but to young adult and adult readers as well.

One of the "Great Stories" to come out of WWII

I recently reread "They Fought Alone" after finding that two of W.E.B. Griffin's best-selling WWII fiction books were about Colonel Wendell Fertig's guerrilla campaign in the Philippines. These two books--"The Fighting Agents" and "Behind the Lines"--mix a little fact with a lot of fiction, but include some material from the John Keats book. I reread Keats to separate the fact from the fiction. I also stumbled upon a fall 2002 article on the Special Forces in "American Heritage" magazine, which mentioned Fertig's follow-up role in helping to organize the Green Berets in the 1950s--a story I did not know until reading Griffin. What a small world!
Griffin knew Fertig at Fort Bragg, which is where Fertig helped found the Special Warfare School and, interestingly, where Fertig's great-grandson, Dave Hudson, wrote his review of the Keats book. Griffin stated that Fertig's lack of promotion to general-officer rank, after commanding 30,000 guerrillas--the equivalent of an Army Corps, was one of the great travesties of justice perpetrated by a jealous MacArthur staff after the war.
Having known a by-then grandfatherly Colonel Fertig in the early 1960s when he was at the Colorado School of Mines, I would agree with Griffin's assessment. Wendell Fertig was one of a very select group of real heroes, not the instant, media-manufactured, post-9/11 kind.
I hope Hollywood and Brad Pitt can bring Colonel Fertig some very belated, posthumous justice, although I am not optimistic based on Keats' and Griffin's lack of success. However, the two authors must be given considerable credit for keeping this remarkable story alive for 40 years from the publication of "They Fought Alone" and 60 years after the actual events so that Hollywood could finally "discover" it.

Excellent book

"They Fought Alone" is an excellent book. It tells the story of COL Wendell W. Fertig and the United States Forces in the Philippines during World War II. USFIP, as it was known, fought guerrilla warfare against the occupying Japanese forces from the surrender of American forces in the Philippines (i.e. the Bataan Death March) until GEN MacArthur's return. If you have any interest in military history and/or guerrilla warfare, this book would be of interest to you. There is presently a movie script based on this book and in talks for production for a big-screen adaptation. Incidentally, COL Wendell W. Fertig was my great-grandfather.

The Bullet with Your Name on It.

Two years ago (9/99), I took "They Fought Alone" with me to a very large but remote mining site in the Philippines. I had met Col. Fertig numerous times nearly 40 years ago, but I had never read his book. I thought that his book would give me insight to the Filippino people and it did not disappoint me. It quickly became the "best read book in camp". After the Western employees read the book, it made the rounds of the Filippinos. I donated "They Fought Alone" to the newly built camp library when I left the Philippines.
Col. Fertig said a number of times that you only need to fear the bullet with your name on it. We, Americans, need to take a page from his book and start filling airliners and go back to our normal lives after 9/11.

I have thoroughly enjoyed each book in this series! Each time I read the next one it becomes my favorite and I adore the main characters and all the supporting characters -- you just have to start at the first of this series because the stories all intertwine (this author is a genius). Eagerly awaiting the next story!

Another great read by Charity Parkerson! I enjoyed reading Kieran and Henley's story! In this book, I loved how the author just jumped right into it. No long drawn out story of the main characters get together. I'm looking forward to reading Shattered!

A very well written story. Henley was such a wreck it was amazing to see him pull himself together. He really put himself out there with Kieran. Kieran is real supportive and able to take control of Henley and help him not spin out of control. Since it was a novella it didn't get as in depth as I would have liked. However it was still a good read.

Jon Ronson is an award-winning writer and documentary maker. He is the author of many bestselling books, including Frank: The True Story that Inspired the Movie, Lost at Sea: The Jon Ronson Mysteries, The Psychopath Test, The Men Who Stare at Goats and Them: Adventures with Extremists. His first fictional screenplay, Frank, co-written with Peter Straughan, starred Michael Fassbender. He lives in London and New York City.

Very interesting and informative

I am a junior in high school and for my english class we were asked to pick a nonfiction book to read. Our teacher said it could be anything we were interested in and immediately I thought about psychology, and more specifically psychopathy. I was instantly draw into this book because of my own fascination of the topic. The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson is a very interesting book that takes you through psychopathy and the mental illness “industry”. The book primarily focuses on different cases of violence or murder done by psychopaths. The author believes that psychopaths are living with us and are just pretending to be normal, because they are very good at acting like everyone else. He is relaying information to the audience about how psychopaths think and function and to also show others how you can use Bob Hare’s Psychopath Checklist to identify some. Ronson also explores the mental illnesses industry and specifically medication being prescribed to deal with mental illnesses and how medication can be misdiagnosed. The book does not just list a lot of facts and rely information to a point where is it hard to grasp, Ronson takes such a big topic like psychology and psychopathy and describes it in a way that is easy to understand. The book includes different case studies involving crimes done by psychopaths, interviews Ronson leads with potential psychopaths, and much more. There is not one moment in this book where I was bored, yet I was still able to grasp so much material. I think this book would be a really great read for other high school students and anyone older because it is an average book that is easy to read yet I was able to retain so much information from this book.

Too lightweight for the topic.

While there are some interesting case studies in this book, I just felt that it was too much of a journalistic compile of other people's research to warrant the 5 stars. It is thin material at best and spun out through Ronson's own visits to the subjects. But nothing of massive impact or gravity stands out. The topic is so potentially interesting but it needs more scholarly input to avoid being just a collection of index cards. He certainly did a bit of travel in the process of writing the book but I would like to have seen more on the effects of testing, a parallel with say, the trendy (but scary) HR personality tests from the 1980s which had similar questions. Somehow, the book just seems way to small to pay adequate attention to an issue that is seeing some growth in modern times. Substance abuse? Chemical pollution? Any other indicators? It's a broader area than the journey's span.

Funny, dark, and compassionate

Funny, dark, and compassionate are good words to describe all Ronson's books, and this is no different. Released in 2002, Ronson spends time with Alex Jones, David Icke, and Omar Bakri Mohammed among others to investigate extremism and conspiracy theory in every flavor. Jones might be the most familiar name because he now has the ear of the president. At press time, he was still pumping out his shrill radio show from a child's bedroom at his house in Austin and accusing the cable company of cutting his ISDN line for political reasons. Some things haven't changed. The most revealing portrait in this book for me was Ronson's time with Rachael Weaver, who was a child when federal agents raided her family's home in Idaho. As a former resident of that state, the story was not unfamiliar, but Ronson tells it with compassion. It's hard to ascribe balance to a book about unbalanced people, but Ronson manages to peak under the hood in the case of some of his subjects and differentiates the misunderstood (Randy Weaver) to the PR mavens who thrive on controversy (Omar Mohammed) to the true believers (Jones). #Recommended
